Update on OMP for Government
Gavin Dahl, who leads OMF's Open Media Project for Government, just returned from Olympia, Washington where he represented OMF and the Colorado Channel at a gathering of state civic networks. NAPAN, the National Alliance for Public Affairs Networks, brought together representatives from Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Montana, Oregon and Washington state. The small but dedicated group discussed best practices in producing gavel-to-gavel TV coverage of state legislatures, sharing ideas about funding, non-partisan political independence, and providing context through additional production efforts.

Out of more than a dozen state public affairs networks tracked by NAPAN, it appears the Colorado Channel utilizes the smallest operating budget at less than $250,000. Open Media Foundation provides gavel-to-gavel coverage of Colorado State Legislature for the Colorado Channel. OMF is also offering the OMP software service to other public agencies, already working with the City of Thornton and the State Judiciary. The City of Louisville will be the next municipality running our software, featuring easy-to-use public meeting video archives, with time-stamped agendas and great citizen engagement tools.

Intern Profile - Vinson Powell
Earlier, we interviewed Vinson Powell, a TV Station (Public Access) intern at Denver Open Media. This is what he had to say about his internship experiences.

"I have been an intern here at Denver Open Media for about eight months. Before my internship, I worked in education for Denver and Aurora public schools. Also, I'm a musician and entertainer. I play the flute and saxophone professionally, and have many recordings in my past, from jingles on radio to appearing on several albums with local and national acts.

I became interested in the function of Denver Open Media through watching channels 56 and 57. My media interest started in the fifth grade when I was the audio/visual kid in school. So you see it's been a lifetime dream to get deeply involved with media production.

I have worked on a couple of projects so far for the community. One project is called 1 Day in Denver, and I am currently editing coverage of July's Colorado Black Arts Festival.

I have learned a lot from my studies here at DOM - all the different software that is used in the industry for making fine videos and the operation of professional video equipment.

I believe each city should have this kind of access to the education and hands-on training and the use of this kind of gear. It is still important to keep the masses informed without being restrained from the big powers of corporate media.

I look forward to bigger and greater things working with Denver Open Media and with the community."
