DOM Equipment News - Psyched About the New Cyc?

Studio B will undergo a few changes this February! We are expanding the green screen wall by transforming it into a true cyclorama wall. The 13'x13' curved semicircle construction will provide 180 degrees of wall space for members to easily record professional green screen footage and use virtual sets for live and taped studio productions. Construction is planned to start on February 17th, so Studio B will not be open for reservations until February 25th.

Below is an example of what the cyc wall will look like upon completion.

HandsOn Tech Denver News

HandsOn Tech Denver has launched!

Our HandsOn Tech VISTAs are looking for volunteers skilled in technology to provide free trainings for nonprofits. Topics for the trainings can be anything tech related, so long as it has practical applications for local nonprofits. If you have a tech expertise, let us know!

As an example, representatives from the online marketing agency 90octane will be delivering a workshop titled Google Analytics and Search Engine Optimization for Nonprofits on February 12th. Don't forget, we are always looking for volunteers to help with individual tech projects that local nonprofits may have. For more information, visit www.openmediafoundation.org/handsontech.

 Letter from the Executive Director

The Open Media Foundation team started 2014 with four days of team-building, inclusiveness training, and strategic planning. We've done strategic planning before, but never quite like this.

Each of our departments devised some strong goals for the year, some of which you may be able to help us out with!
  • Our Board of Directors resolved to expand outreach and partnerships, so if you know of anyone who should be working with OMF, please let us know.
  • Our Education Department committed to an expansion, especially through the new HandsOn Tech program, which matches skilled volunteers from the community with nonprofits addressing poverty.
  • Our Services departments (which provide Web Development, Video Production, PR/Branding, and other communications services for nonprofit and government clients) resolved to integrate services to a greater extent, providing a more comprehensive level of service to all our clients.
  • Our Tools Department is committed to improving the DOM internship program, member services and the web tools along with more HD and other equipment and facilities upgrades in 2014.
  • Lastly, we committed to expanding our government transparency work, aiming to double the number of state and local governments using our OMP-for-Gov open-source, cloud-based software services.
First Friday at Denver Open Media, February 7
On the first Friday of each month, DOM hosts a free community event with local performance groups, musical acts and nonprofit partners. These events are broadcast live on Comcast Channel 57 in Denver as well as streamed on DOM's website.  Events are cablecast and streamed live in Denver Open Media's Studio A.

Join DOM on the First Friday of February, featuring two of Denver's outstanding poets, Dominique Christina and Bianca Mikahn.

Heavily influenced by her family's work in the civil rights movement, Dominique Christina is a writer, performer, educator, and activist. She holds four national titles in the three years she has been competing in slam, including the 2012 Women of the World Slam Champion and 2011 National Poetry Slam Champion. She is presently the only person to have held two national titles at one time.

Drawing from years as a celebrated facilitator of therapeutic arts and mental wellness workshops, Bianca Mikahn knows what it takes to connect to any and all populations through the joys and tribulations of the human experience.

These ladies promise to deliver a wonderful poetic evening for all who attend and view this DOM First Friday segment.

The program's nonprofit spotlight will feature the Denver African American Philanthropists.

OMF Launches New Database with NREL
Last January, OMF completed a 9-month project with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to upgrade and launch a new version of their High Performance Buildings Database.

The Buildings Database is a shared resource for the building industry. The Database, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy and the NREL, is a unique central repository of in-depth information and data on high-performance, green building projects across the United States and abroad. This collaboration increases the reach of the information and saves building designers and owners from having to provide the same information to multiple sources.

The Database includes information on the energy use, environmental performance, design process, finances, and other aspects of each project. Members of the design and construction teams are listed, as are sources for additional information. In total, up to twelve screens of detailed information are provided for each project profile. Projects range in size from small single-family homes or tenant fit-outs within buildings to large commercial and institutional buildings and even entire campuses.
