Provider Symposium Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente East Bay a Success

The SLI California Concussion Coalition held its first provider symposium on the West coast. Over 165 primary care physicians, pediatricians, neuropsychologists, athletic trainers, school nurses, and other medical professionals gathered at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital Tower in Oakland, CA, on Feb. 9 for "Concussion: What You Don't Know CAN Hurt You." The eight hour program provided continuing medical education credits and focused on evidence-based care for the brain injured patient in a provider's given practice.

SLI thanks Coalition co-chairs  Cindy J. Chang, M.D., and Eric J. Freitag, Psy.D., for making the event possible, and Coalition member Kaiser Permanente East Bay for sponsoring the event. We thank the Kaiser CME team, Daria Anderson and CME Chief and Pediatrician Joshua T. Schechtel, M.D., as well as Kaiser staff Jun Orlanes and Pediatric Neurologist Jean C. Hayward, M.D., for planning and hosting the event. The symposium received unanimous positive feedback.

King-Devick Test to Support Coalition & Education Nationwide
We are pleased to announce that the King-Devick Test has become an Official Educational Partner of SLI. The King-Devick Test will support both the California Concussion Coalition and SLI's national concussion education efforts. SLI looks forward to working with the King-Devick Test to help solve the concussion crisis. Click here to learn more about the King-Devick Test, an objective rapid sideline screening test for concussions that a growing body of studies show is an effective test for concussion.
SLICE Chapters at USC & UC Berkeley to Launch This Month
SLI is in the process of launching two new SLICE chapters in California: one at the University of Southern California (USC),  led by faculty advisors Helaine Lopes, Ph.D., and Tracy Zaslow, M.D., and the other at University of California at Berkeley (Cal), led by faculty advisory and California Concussion Coalition co-chair Cindy J. Chang, M.D. SLI is currently training medical students and undergraduates in the SLICE curriculum, and they look forward to reaching local youth in grades 4-12 through SLICE presentations by the end of March.
