Linking Leadership to Academics:

The Girl Scout Difference!

"Without Girl Scouts I would not be where I am today. I think I would not get good grades, I don't think I would do well in school, and I don't think I would get along with others as well as I do." So said a 12-year-old Girl Scout in the Girl Scout Research Institute's study done in 2012.
Read a one-page review of the study.

  Gold Awardees:  Katrina and Margo

Katrina K. Katrina K. of Walton is a high school senior. She made "happy bags" for her Girl Scout Gold Award Take Action Project.  She filled them with things for patients in a hospital to do in hopes of keeping their minds off why they are there. Through executing the project, she learned to simplify directions because she was working with younger children. And, she learned to take charge of situations and be patient and flexible with others' opinions. The local 4H club is continuing Katrina's project.

Margo M.
Margo M. is a sophomore at Victor Central School. Her Gold Award Take Action Project was putting together backpacks with school supplies for children whose families can't afford them. She provided these backpacks to students in kindergarten through sixth grades. The Rotary Club has agreed to continue this project annually.

Gold Award Projects Happening May 11

When Girl Scout Shannon B.'s cousin, PFC Jack Sweet, was killed in Iraq on February 8, 2008, she knew she wanted to do something special that would honor all of those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Read more about Shannon's project and what's happening on May 11.

Haley L. of Deposit, is holding a Self Esteem Workshop as part of earning her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. The workshop will be held on Saturday, May 11 from 4-8 p.m. at the Deposit Central High School and is open to girls in grades 7-12. The name of the workshop is "Where's the Line?" The workshop is geared toward anti-bullying and self esteem. Girls will also receive a booklet of information of outside activities they can participate in afterschool and on weekends.

Pegasus SU Donates to Juliette Low Fund

Many troops and services units make annual contributions to the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund that helps girls across the globe participate in Girl Scouting.  In February, troops from the Pegasus Service Unit (Horseheads) held a Thinking Day event and collected $147 for the fund.  They also held a baby shower. Troops contributed items that were presented to the Children's Miracle Network.  See a collage of the fun the 13 troops and 100 girls had!
