Optimus Tactical HY Strategy Beats Benchmarks & Peer

Tactical Spotlight:  High Yield

We were thrilled to learn that our High Yield Bull/Bear Strategy was ranked #1 (by Morningstar) out of all 89 fixed income ETF strategies during the past one-year period!

Tactical High Yield (Long-Only)

Fortunately, for those that like the tactical high yield bond approach, late last year we launched a long-only version of the same strategy.  You now have two options:  Optimus High Yield Bull/Bear (can be long high yield bonds, cash or short U.S. equities) or Optimus Tactical High Yield (can be long high yield bonds or cash).  While High Yield Bull/Bear has been running live for over three years, Tactical High Yield uses the same parameters for buying and selling high yield bonds, with lower turnover and volatility.

The chart below shows the combination of backtested and live trade signal results since 2007.

We often get asked, "Sure, it looks great during the backtested period, but what about live results?"  Our answer is, it still looks very strong.  As the performance chart above indicates, the strategy continues to be a strong performer with lower volatility than its peer & benchmarks since going live.  Notice that during the downswing in summer 2011, the strategy side-stepped the bulk of the move down, while the two high yield benchmarks (red & yellow lines) and our main peer (purple line) dropped.  Also, notice the angle of each line within the gray live results area.  We're pretty much inline with the high yield benchmarks, while we continue to outpace our main peer as well as other bond benchmarks (green & aqua lines).

What's Under The Hood?

  • Emotionless Investing - systematic, rules-based investment methodology
  • Low Turnover - typically makes 3-4 trades per year
  • No Bond Index Correlation - near zero correlation to Barclays Aggregate Bond Index
  • Low Volatility - typically has only two-thirds the volatility of high yield benchmarks
  • Capital Preservation - timely moves to cash to reduce portfolio volatility
