NEWS FROM ROP
Today's cutting-edge, rigorous and relevant career and technical education (CTE) prepares students for a wide range of high-wage, high-skill, high-demand careers.
Imagine a world without nurses, computer technicians, construction managers, dentists, preschool teachers, police officers, chefs, fire fighters, or entrepreneurs. While in high school, students have the opportunity to take CTE courses taught by industry professionals that could be the inspiration for their future careers. Coastline ROP offers CTE courses at 26 high schools within five local school districts. Our courses are designed for ALL students due to a combination of academic knowledge and technical education, which provides students with a pathway to post-secondary education and/or a successful career.
Classes on our campus include: Art of Animation, Culinary Arts, E-Marketing, Entertainment Art, Film and Digital Media Studies, and Visual Imagery. Contact your counselor to discuss enrolling in one of the bell scheduled ROP classes.
Many other classes are offered in the afternoon and evening throughout our five partnering school districts. Contact your Career Specialist, Kathleen Shannon, in the Career Center for more information.
Everyone should enroll in an ROP class, because Career and Technical Education Works!
What is Career and Technical Education?
■Encompasses 94 percent of high school students and 13 million post-secondary students.
■Includes high schools, career centers, community and technical colleges, four-year universities and more.
■Educates students for a range of career options through 16 Career Clusters and 81 pathways.
■Integrates with academics in a rigorous and relevant curriculum.
■Features high school and post-secondary partnerships, enabling clear pathways to certifications and degrees.
■Fulfills employer needs in high-skill, high-wage, high-demand areas.
■Prepares students to be college and career-ready by providing core academic skills, employ-ability skills and technical, job-specific skills.
CTE Works for High School Students
High school students involved in CTE are more engaged, perform better and graduate at higher rates.
■81 percent of dropouts say relevant, real-world learning opportunities would have kept them in high school.
■The average high school graduation rate for students concentrating in CTE programs is 90.18 percent, compared to an average national freshman graduation rate of 74.9 percent.
■More than 70 percent of secondary CTE concentrators pursued post-secondary education shortly after high school.

TOP CULINARY TEAM IN THE STATE!
Eighteen NHHS students attended the 4-day FHA-HERO (California Affiliate of FCCLA, Family Career & Community Leaders of America) conference, twelve of whom competed. The conference/competition took place April 20-23rd. CONGRATULATIONS to our Commercial Food Prep Team: Hailey Mahaffey, Erin O'Connor and Jaclyn Manderson, who took First Place. Other NHHS students placing are Amanda Lacher (First in Salad Preparation), Luke Bramm (Second in Breads Display), and Jason Call (Third in Breads Display).
This qualifies our team to go to the Nationals July 6-11, in Nashville, Tennessee!!!
When not in competition, students were in career workshops, on industry field-trips and networking with leaders in various home economics pathways. They learned about professionalism, the importance of taking advantage of opportunities and how to give back to community through service.

Absence Phone Line:
When your student is absent, please report it.
Call (949) 515-6305
Just a reminder that no student will be released from school over the telephone and no early dismissals will be issued over the telephone. The parent/guardian should send their student to school with a note to obtain an Off Campus Permit. The student needs to give their note to Attendance before school or at break.
In the event of an emergency, a parent/guardian must come into the Attendance Office and sign the student out of school. The Attendance Office will not telephone classrooms to have students excused from school out of respect for instructional time.
If a student becomes ill while at school, the student should not call their parent. They should instead go to the nurse's office. The nurse will call home for the student.
Thank you to all Newport Harbor parents and students for your understanding and your cooperation.
