IMPORTANT REMINDER TO ALL STUDENTS 

TO WEAR YOUR BICYCLE HELMETS - BE SAFE!

This is an important reminder that Newport Beach and Costa Mesa Police Departments are actively enforcing the bike helmet law and are ticketing students who are not in compliance. 

So be safe and wear your helmet when riding your bicycle at all times!

    

 

Project Tomorrow Innovation in Education Awards

They are now accepting nominations for the Project Tomorrow Innovation in Education Awards,which recognize schools, educational leaders and students for their innovative uses of science, math and technology in the classroom and community. This year's awards will be presented at the 20th Annual High-Tech Innovation Awards dinner reception in October (exact date TBD) in conjunction with OC Tech Alliance's own corporate awards. Award recipients will receive regional and national recognition through both online and traditional media outlets. All finalists will receive funding to use to expand a science, math or technology program. This year's award categories include: 

 

Innovative School wide Program ($1,000 Winner Award, $250 Finalist Award)

High Impact Teacher ($1,000 Award, $250 Finalist Award)

Emerging Student Innovator ($1,500 Scholarship, $500 Finalist Scholarship) 

 

Please help us highlight the innovative efforts of Newport Harbor High School, its educators and students by spreading the word. Here are five easy ways:

1. Send, post and distribute this flyer & overview

 

2. Forward this email to teachers, students, academic departments or campus clubs who are using science, math, & technology in innovative ways

NHHS' 2012-13 Online Family Directory is ready for viewing! To access it, follow the instructions in the email that was sent to you on Saturday, Dec. 15th. That specific email, with the subject line: "NHHS Family Directory is now online for your family's use" is necessary for you to successfully register and create your password to access the directory. If you did not receive this email and want to access the directory, please contact Diana Long at dlong@nmusd.us or call 949-646-1556 ext. 1.

 

Printed copies of the directory will be available for $5 each, after winter break. Please email dlong@nmusd.us if you would like to order one. Congratulations to senior Fernando Garcia, for his cover design! Thanks to Jeni Cunningham of the Newport Harbor Educational Foundation for her work on the directory. The NHHS Online Family Directory is a community service provided by the NHHS PTA, NHHS Associate Student Body and Newport Harbor Educational Foundation.

1:1 Junior Mentor Program  

 

Parents of students in the Jr. Mentor Program should be advised that all mentor meetings, job shadows and written reports must be completed by your son or daughter and turned in to their Mentor Coordinator by March 26, 2013.  Students have been informed of their progress towards completion; please check with them to ensure they are on track.  Information will be mailed home on February 1st about the annual Mentor Appreciation Luncheon where we will thank the Mentors for all the time they have given to our students.

Coastline ROP offers
CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION

  • Career and technical education (CTE) prepares students for a wide range of careers and further educational opportunities. These careers may require varying levels of education - including industry-recognized credentials, postsecondary certificates, and two-and four-year degrees.
  • CTE is at the forefront of preparing students to be "college-and career-ready." CTE equips students with:
  • core academic skills and the ability to apply those skills to concrete situations in order to function in the workplace and in routine daily activities
  • employability skills (such as critical thinking and responsibility) that are essential in any career area
  • job-specific, technical skills related to a specific career pathway

Many Spring ROP classes began last week, some are beginning this week-  Congratulations to the students who have signed up and going to ROP classes.

NEWPORT HARBOR BOY'S LACROSSE TRYOUTS

Come join in the fastest growing sport in America!  Davidson Field 4:00 p.m. today, February 5th through February 15th.  Equipment will be provided for tryouts if you don't have any.  Must have mouth guard and cleats of your own.

The Newport Harbor Educational Foundation Nominating Committee has a request of YOU. If you know of any parent, community member, or grandparent(s) who would be an asset to our foundation's board, please send me their names, phone number and email. We are striving to have representatives from all of Harbor's feeder schools on our board, and would love your suggestions of thoughtful folks who follow through on projects, and want to help maintain excellence at their community's high school. If they have a particular skill set, please notate that as well.

When your student is absent, please report it.

Just a reminder that no student will be released from school over the telephone and no early dismissals will be issued over the telephone. The parent/guardian should send their student to school with a note to obtain an Off Campus Permit. The student needs to give their note to Attendance before school or at break.

 

In the event of an emergency, a parent/guardian must come into the Attendance Office and sign the student out of school. The Attendance Office will not telephone classrooms to have students excused from school out of respect for instructional time. 

If a student becomes ill while at school, the student should not call their parent. They should instead go to the nurse's office. The nurse will call home for the student.
