Keep Berries Fresh, Longer!

Mona's recipe to extend the freshness of berries

With fresh berries just starting to hit the farmer's markets, here's a tip on how to keep them fresh.

Wash them with a vinegar solution! The vinegar acts as a disinfectant that kills any mold spores and bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit.

When you purchase your berries, prepare a mixture in a bowl of one part vinegar (apple cider vinegar work best) and ten parts water.  Dump the berries into the mixture, and be sure to churn them.
Once the berries have fully been mixed, drain them. If you'd like, you can rinse the berries, though the mixture is already heavily diluted, so you won't actually taste the vinegar. This process allows raspberries to last a week or more, and strawberries to go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft. You can eat a few and pop the rest in the fridge.

So now, you can go ahead and stock up on those pricy little gems, knowing

they'll stay fresher, longer.

You're so berry welcome!
