CesiWelcome back, Cesi!

'Imiloa's Education Associate and Outreach Coordinator, Celeste (Cesi) Manuia Ha'o, returned recently from a 6-week stint as Apprentice Navigator on the Hokule'a as part of its three-year Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage. Cesi HaoCesi's participation had a unique significance for her and her family as she was asked to take responsibility for plotting the canoe's course between the Cook Islands and her ancestral home in Samoa.

A culture-based astronomy education major and student of Polynesian voyaging at 'Imiloa under Navigator-in-Residence Chad Kalepa Baybayan, Cesi had been called to Samoa by her grandfather to share the navigation skills her people have lost over time.

Back at 'Imiloa this fall, Cesi is blending her personal experience and her grounding in science to deliver an innovative navigation-themed STEM curriculum to schools and communities across Hawai'i as part of 'Imiloa's new mobile science outreach effort.

If you missed Cesi's standing room-only wayfinding presentations at 'Imiloa on October 11 and 24, you can read her amazing story on the UH Hilo website.

Philae Becomes Humanity's First Creation to Touch a Comet

Philae on comet

A decade ago, on March 2nd, 2004, an Ariane 5G+ rocket blasted away from the European Space Agency's Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana, South America. This rocket carried a very special cargo: the first spacecraft ever sent to rendezvous with a comet. Known as Rosetta, this spacecraft would then spend the next ten and a half years traveling through interplanetary space on its way to Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko (commonly called "Comet C-G" or "Comet 67P" after its formal astronomical designation). After travelling more than 4 billion miles -- the equivalent of more than 20 round trips between the Earth and Sun -- Rosetta arrived at its destination in mid-September 2014.

Rosetta did not make this journey alone; accompanying Rosetta was a small lander called Philae, which successfully landed on Comet C-G on November 12th, 2014, becoming humanity's first creation to touch a comet. Philae's foot can be seen above in the corner of
this incredible image taken from the comet's surface.
