Maunakea Skies, February 21st at 7pm
'Imiloa's monthly Maunakea Skies planetarium presentations are held on the third Friday of each month. The evening begins with a tour of the current night sky over Hawai'i, pointing out prominent constellations and stars one can see during this time of year. Next, a special guest presenter from one of the Maunakea observatories shares the latest research in astronomy, taking advantage of the digital media tools in the 3D planetarium. February's topic: Modern Cosmology
speaker: Dr. Simon Radford, Caltech Submillimeter Observatory
host: Christopher Phillips, 'Imiloa
Over the past century, advances in astronomy and physics have brought us a detailed picture of the structure and evolution of the universe. Despite this success, however, the composition of the vast majority of the universe remains a mystery. In his talk, Dr. Radford will outline the development of modern cosmology and describe our current understanding of the overall properties of the universe.

Spacewalking Astronauts
|
Credit: NASA
| For nearly two decades after Alexei Leonov's pioneering space walk in 1965, orbiting astronauts who ventured outside were always attached in some way to their spacecraft. Not until the space shuttle STS-41B, launched thirty years ago this February, did spacewalking astronauts sever the ties that previously bound them. During that eight day mission, astronauts Bruce McCandless and Robert Stewart each tested the MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit), a backpack with nitrogen gas thrusters that the astronauts could operate with joysticks on the arm rest. McCandless set a record by venturing almost 100 meters from the space shuttle.
