Winter Wayfinding Talk, December 6th, 7pm

Revitalizing Wave Navigation in the Marshall Islands

Image for Wayfinding Talk Dec 2013'Imiloa will host its winter 2013 Wayfinding Talk on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 7pm with Dr. Joe Genz, University of Hawai'i anthropology professor, speaking on the revitalization of wave navigation in the Marshall Islands.

The Marshallese are well known historically for their extremely fast outrigger voyaging canoes and "stick chart" representations of their islands that encode their wave-based system of navigation. In his talk, Dr. Genz will describe his research on a Marshallese elder whose navigational training was interrupted as a result of the U.S. nuclear weapons testing program in the 1940s and 1950s, but who subsequently became a recognized "person of the sea."

'Imiloa After Dark: Kainani Kahaunaele Live,
December 27th at 7pm

Kainani Kahaunaele
Singer-songwriter and Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winner Kainani Kahaunaele will perform her fresh Hawaiian compositions under the stars in 'Imiloa's planetarium, Friday, December 27th, 2013 starting at 7pm.

Kainani Kahaunaele was raised by her grandparents in the rural community of Anahola, Kaua'i, surrounded by four generations of musical talent. Her love for Hawaiian music was infused at an early age as she learned to play 'ukulele and harmonize with her family. Whether performing at a lu'au, in church, or at school, she was in training to share the music of her ancestors, her culture, and practices with a more global audience.

Rise of the machines: confirming thousands of exoplanets with Robo-AO

speaker:
Dr. Christoph Baranec, University of Hawai'i, Institute for Astronomy

host:
Christopher Phillips, 'Imiloa

NASA's Kepler mission has been spectacularly successful: it has discovered thousands of planet candidates and is revolutionizing our understanding of the planetary population in our galaxy. While the Kepler planet candidate list generates useful results, the vast majority of the individual candidates remain unconfirmed: currently there are 77 confirmed planetary systems and 2,621 unconfirmed. Prof. Baranec's team, with the help of Robo-AO, a new autonomous laser-guide-star adaptive optics and science instrument, is beginning to change that. The team expects to be able to validate approximately 1,000 of the Kepler candidates, as well as reject more than 100 as being likely false positives.

Comet ISON
Comet ISON

NASA astronomers have captured a new photo of Comet ISON, an image that reveals the comet's intricate tail as it heads for a rendezvous with the sun. "The comet is just nine days away from its close encounter with the sun; hopefully it will survive to put on a nice show during the first week of December," NASA officials wrote of the image. "The star images are trailed because the telescope is tracking on the comet, which is now exhibiting obvious motion with respect to the background stars over a period of minutes."
