Celestial Navigation Planetarium Program, March 8th at 7pm

In Losing the Sight of Land, You Discover the Stars

Our next Friday night planetarium program on March 8th will feature Pwo Navigator Kalepa Baybayan's talk In Losing the Sight of Land, You Discover the Stars starting at 7pm.
Kalepa Baybayan
Join Kalepa's presentation on the history of deep sea voyaging, exploration, and oceanic wayfinding through the indigenous system navigation at sea. Kalepa will share his efforts to revitalize this dynamic maritime culture by steering connections through an experience that explains the symbiotic relationship between land, sea, sky, science, and culture.

"The art of wayfinding includes a vast knowledge of astronomy, ocean sciences, meteorology, environmental sciences, and cultural perspectives, integrated in an understanding of how the environment around you works," states Baybayan, adding "studying these disciplines helps to organize my surroundings in the open ocean."

During the presentation the audience will view the Hawaiian navigational starlines and how they help align the cardinal directions and latitude through a deep sea voyage.

'Imiloa Welcomes Two New Interns

photo of Brialyn OnoderaBrialyn Onodera will be assisting with a few of 'Imiloa's immediate outreach efforts, and helping with the brainstorming efforts in our long-term plans for teen outreach. Her Internship goal is to work with 'Imiloa's partner organizations to mentor high school students in S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) activities and develop educational outreach activities to deliver to local middle/high schools on the island.
photo of Kulia Aveiro-Kalaniopio
Kulia Aveiro-Kalaniopio will be researching the topic of astronomy in Hawai'i from historic times (pre-Western contact) up to the present. With his strength in Hawaiian language, we are especially excited about his ability to do research in original Hawaiian language documents to uncover references to traditional practices surrounding the study of the skies.

Russian Meteorite

photo of Russian meteorite

On February 15th of this year thousands of people living near the Ural Mountains in Russia saw a spectacular meteor streak across the sky. Forceful sound waves arrived at the ground minutes later, knocking people over and breaking windows for hundreds of kilometers. The fireball is thought to have been caused by a 15 meter chunk of rock crashing into the Earth's atmosphere and exploding 12-14 miles above the ground. It is estimated that it had an explosive force of 400 kilotons (about 20 times that of an atom bomb). This image was captured by a Russian truck driver's dash camera.
