Message from the Executive Director

Aloha Senator Inouye

photo of Senator Inouye's visit

'Imiloa joins that rest of Hawai'i in mourning the loss of our beloved Senator Daniel K. Inouye. His dedication to empowering Hawai'i and his commitment to bettering our nation as a whole is unprecedented. It is impossible to summarize all of what he has done for Hawai'i... but this I know, 'Imiloa is one of his prized endeavors that he was so very proud of. 'Imiloa would not have been a possibility without his advocacy and support for the mission of bringing our community together around advancing the culture and astronomy of Maunakea. Not only did he provide the financial support to bring the center into existence, but he also helped to lay the foundation for our mission and our work.

Let us continue the good work and mission of 'Imiloa... and continue to honor his vision...

Let us proceed forward working together through open communication, and where necessary, compromise, to allow for continued scientific exploration and discovery, while respectful of cultural practices and protocols, as well as a joint commitment to an education that bridges astronomy and culture in a way that will inspire Hawai'i's children, grounded in the culture, to seek out a career in science.
                            - Senator Daniel K. Inouye, 2001

Aloha 'oe e Senator Inouye.

me ke aloha mau,
Ka'iu Kimura
New Friday Night Planetarium Programming

An eclectic mix of entertaining Friday night programming is coming to the planetarium starting January 4th. Rock fan or music lover, a fan of deep space astronomy or exploring the discoveries on Maunakea, the 'Imiloa Friday Night programs will have something for everyone.

Hitchhiker SlideThe new Friday night format kicks off with the popular live sky show, 3D Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe January 4th at 7pm. The program will "fly" participants out into space on a unique and engaging tour of the universe that astronomers are discovering with the help of the observatories on Maunakea and other space based missions. Following up the next Friday will be The Wall, where the classic Pink Floyd album is brought to life with a stunning fulldome digital interpretation of the sounds and imagery from the album's music. On the third Friday of each month, learn about the Hawaiian night sky at the monthly Maunakea Skies talk where astronomers from the Maunakea observatories speak about their recent discoveries and the science behind them.

The Friday night program time is 7pm. Tickets are $8 for Individual, Dual, Kupuna and Family members; $6 for Patron Members; Free for Silver, Gold and Corporate Members. Non-member rate is $10. Pre-purchase tickets at the 'Imiloa front desk or by phone at 969-9703.

The Pinwheel Galaxy

M33 is a spiral galaxy approximately 3 million light years from Earth in the constellation Triangulum. It is sometimes referred to as the Pinwheel Galaxy, and is the third-largest member of the Local Group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way Galaxy, the Andromeda Galaxy and about 50 other smaller galaxies. This stunning image of M33 was taken with the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) atop Maunakea using MegaCam, one of the largest digital imaging cameras available to astronomers. When you visit 'Imiloa be sure to check out this image printed on canvas on the way from the lobby to our Sky Garden Restaurant!
