Shoot for the Stars!

A bow is a curved elastic limb which shoots aerodynamic projectiles.  It is also the unlikely symbol of the holiday of Lag Ba'omer - commemorating the passing of the great mystic, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai.

There are many theories as to why this ancient weapon system became the symbol of the day:
  • It was a hidden reference to the Revolt against Rome-in 135 CE.
  • It was symbolic of the rainbow that never shined in during the lifetime of the sage as a sign of his piety.
  • It reminds us of the Roman decree prohibiting Torah study and how Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, and others, continued to study in the forest under the guise of being hunters.
Although all these approaches have validity, the Lubavitcher Rebbe offered a novel insight.  The most powerful and advanced bow can only launch its arrow if the string is pulled tightly first. The more you pull inward, towards your heart, the more expansive is your reach.

The breadth of our achievement is dependent on passion and sincerity.  We need to access our "core" - our neshama - to unleash the full scope of our potential.  Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai revealed the inner most dimensions of our traditions.  He gave us our bow and our arrow.  All we need to do now is hold it firmly, pull-in, and launch our innate greatness.
