 A Lesson in Sound Architecture
A fascinating aspect of the Temple architecture was the placement of the Kiyor - the laver.  This water basin was used by the Kohanim (Priests) to cleanse their hands and feet prior to worship.  One would have expected the laver to be positioned near the entrance to the courtyard.  Surprisingly, it was placed well into the complex, beyond the central bronze altar.  If the primary goal was to prepare for worship, why place the laver deep within the structure?

The holiness of the Temple intensified the deeper you penetrated. The laver represented the attitude and mindset we bring to the table.  Our tradition understood that positive thinking is the greatest challenge we face in life and deserves the utmost reverence.

Preparing ourselves with affirmative thought unleashes a sense of inner peace, gratitude and the optimism to change reality.  These were among the highest goals of the Kohanim.

This trend is manifest throughout Jewish tradition and finds its ways to the first words we utter each day:  Modeh Ani - thank you for the gift of life.  It may take a few more steps but our headspace determines it all.
