JNF

This Tu Bi'Shevat, JNF will be planting trees along the roads and around the Israeli communities in the western Negev. The citizens of these communities live under the constant threat of sniper fire and rocket attacks from within Gaza. JNF will be committing all tree planting efforts to improve the security of these citizens. Planting trees along roads and around the vulnerable communities will serve as a line of defense by creating a visual barrier, making them less of a target. To see video footage of the area and to understand how vital this project is, please click on this link or to donate, please click here.

Beth Jacob

Beth Jacob invites you to its Israeli Film and Cultural Festival
Saturday, March 4 at 8:15pm: Igor and the Crane's Journey (view trailer)
Sunday, March 5 at 10:30am: The Journey of Vaan Nguyen (view trailer)
Sunday, March 5 at 2:00pm: Turn left at the end of the world (view trailer)

Each of the three films presents a portrait of an immigrant journey in which protagonists question who they are in a country whose culture is so different from their place of birth.
The universality and relevance of this question will be among the issues raised during moderated discussions following each film.

The weekend also includes an art exhibit byAlice Zilberberg, an award-winning photographer and visual artist.
The festival's $30 admission includes all three films and lunch on Sunday. One day only ticket price is $20. To order tickets please call 905.522.1351

Are You a Good Listener?

Anyone alive during the JFK assassination, or 9/11, remembers their

exact location when they heard the news.

In the aftermath of the Exodus, Yitro, Moshe's father-in-law, experienced such a moment.  The Torah reports that "He heard... and he came."  What is unclear is what exactly he heard and when he actually came (See Rashi 18:1). The question is obvious. If the content and context wasn't really important, why the need to share that he heard anything at all!

Perhaps the Torah omitted the details to emphasize that Yitro's greatness wasn't what he heard but that he heard.  In short, he was a good listener.  Often in life we confuse dialogue with shared monologues.  Many recommend that we pause for 3 seconds before responding, to accustom ourselves to hear and reflect.  Yitro may have been immortalized simply because he listened.  Sometimes the most basic things are the most fundamental.

Shabbat Shalom.
