Anyone alive during the JFK assassination, or 9/11, remembers their exact location when they heard the news.
In the aftermath of the Exodus, Yitro, Moshe's father-in-law, experienced such a moment. The Torah reports that "He heard... and he came." What is unclear is what exactly he heard and when he actually came (See Rashi 18:1). The question is obvious. If the content and context wasn't really important, why the need to share that he heard anything at all!
Perhaps the Torah omitted the details to emphasize that Yitro's greatness wasn't what he heard but that he heard. In short, he was a good listener. Often in life we confuse dialogue with shared monologues. Many recommend that we pause for 3 seconds before responding, to accustom ourselves to hear and reflect. Yitro may have been immortalized simply because he listened. Sometimes the most basic things are the most fundamental.
Shabbat Shalom.
