It's striking that at the final moment of the Sukkot holiday, we put down our Lulav & Etrog and hold up just the Arava (willow branch). According to the Midrash, the willow is the lowliest of the species lacking both taste or scent (metaphors for good deeds and Torah wisdom). Why, at the last moment, does the willow branch triumph as the unlikely hero? In fact, the entire final day of the Festival was called "Yom Arava" - the day of the willow!
I many ways we are all willows. How many of us truly feel confident in the strength of our wisdom and our choices in life? As we begin our holiday we identify as a lowly Arava bereft of fragrance and taste. Yet, over the course of a week, bundled tightly next to an inspirational Etrog and majestic Lulav, things begin to change. As we wave our willow in all six directions and circle the Torah with it - a metamorphosis begins. On the surface our willow may not appear that much different but, at its core, the seeds of greatness have taken root. We are the willow and the final day of the holiday is our day. So, to all the Aravot out there... raise your heads high! It's time to celebrate!
