Ozarow Remembered - The Helen Klaiman Interview

Moishe Gold was researching his ancestral shtetl of Ozarow, Poland, he had a unique opportunity to interview one of its pre-war inhabitants. On August 16, 2001, Moishe spoke to and videotaped his conversation with Helen Klaiman who regaled him with tales of the town, its inhabitants and its horrible fate under the Nazi regime.

While Helen sadly passed away in 2006, her legacy, trials and tribulations live on through this priceless permanent record.

Please join us for a special evening as Moishe joins Helen's daughters Beverly Sobel & Sarah Klaiman as they reminisce about their ancestral home, the process of creating this video and what it meant to Helen.

Interspersed with the most powerful portions of the interview, Ozarow Remembered will provide a heartwarming look back at this once thriving Jewish community.

The Jewish nation is certainly not short on enemies.  Yet, from all of our notorious tormentors throughout history two stand apart: Amon and Moav. Only they are barred from marrying a Jew for all eternity (See Devarim 23:3).

This treatment is uncharacteristically harsh surpassing the way the Torah treats any other of our oppressors. Their sin?  They failed to offer us bread and water when we encamped at their borders.  The question is obvious.  Although they may have lacked social etiquette, their actions were surely less severe than the genocidal atrocity of others, including the infanticide of Ancient Egypt!

Although the infraction of Amon & Moav may seem minor, one critical aspect set them apart - they were family!  They descended from the same lineage as Abraham and Sara.  It's one thing to antagonize the world, it's another to betray your own.

We live in a world with many enemies. Yet, the most painful and pernicious threat we face are Jews that turn against their own.  Rosh Hashana is a time we focus on unity. Let us keep in mind that in the end, no matter what our ideology or observance level may be, we're all one family.  Together we stand strong.

Shabbat Shalom.
