There was little he ever asked for himself. Yet, Moshe is denied entry to the Promised Land because he hit the rock rather than speaking to it when the nation needed water. Why was this seemingly inconsequential act so significant, particularly when you consider that rocks cannot hear or feel?
This small act was symbolic of a fundamental feature of leadership - you need to know how to speak to rocks.
Often when we attempt to communicate, we look into the face of a child, a teenager, or an adult, and feel that nothing is penetrating. It's easy to look into their blank gaze and become despondent and hopeless. The challenge of life is to keep talking - to have the faith that the message will eventually penetrate.
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein (1895-1986) commented that the quintessential feature of leadership is our ability to talk to rocks. Without that faith and perseverance there is ultimately no promised land.
