A high likeability factor can take you only so far in public office. Aaron the High Priest was undoubtedly popular and the nation mourned his passing more profoundly than they did Moshe's.
Yet, even his leadership was challenged in an open revolt. After lightning bolts from above and devouring earthquakes from below, the nation was still unconvinced. Only after his walking staff sprouted a flower, bud and fruit, was the nation satisfied. Why did the simultaneous appearance of all three stages of growth successfully affirm Aaron's leadership?
The flower is symbolic of beauty and the excitement of new beginnings. However, the longevity of a flower is fleeting and the pedals quickly blow away. What is left is a small uninspiring bud. It takes a lot of perseverance for a bud to become a fruit. They key is to always keep the enthusiasm and idealism - to always remember the flower. This was the strength of Aaron and the symbol his leadership. "Flower power" is the key to any true success.
