Short Vort:  The Lonely Hero
Mordechai seems to be quite a lonely man.  The Megilah introduces him by stating there was "one Jewish man in Shushan, the capital, whose name was Mordechai" (2:5).  How is that possible?  The capital city must have had thousands of Jews!

True, there were many Jews in Shushan.  Yet, only one had the strength to act the part.  Many question why Mordechai instigated Haman.  On the surface, he himself sparked the genocidal plot.  In reality, Mordechai saw a nation that lacked any semblance of Jewish pride and was quickly assimilating away at the Feasts of Persia.

Mordechai realized that even without Haman, this marked the end of Jewish history.  One man exhibited faith, conviction, and courage. All the others eventually followed.  Purim is a celebration of the "Power of One" - the power of one Jew.
