Short Vort:  Silent Messages
In his book, Silent Messages, Albert Mehrabian conceived of the 7% rule.  He argues that only 7% of our power to influence others depends on the words we choose.  93% is dependent on our body language or tone of voice.   It's fascinating that when Moshe descends Mount Sinai his first challenge is to decode voices of faces unseen.  His disciple Yehoshua hears the cacophony of the Golden Calf and perceives it as the voice of war.  Moshe corrects him and informs him that these were in fact the echoes of blasphemy.

At a critical junction in life, God instructs Avraham to listen to whatever his wife Sara has to say.  The exact instructions were "Shema Bekola" - listen to her voice.  Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808-1888) comments that the directive was to listen to her voice, hear her pain and concern, but not focus exclusively on her words.

One of our main challenges in life is to decode the messages of others - to hear beyond the words.  In a world more and more disconnected from face to face interactions we start with a 93% disadvantage. Let's reclaim meaningful connections and learn to hear the voice.
