Short Vort: Staying Power
|
Opportunity knocks but all too often we miss the call. At the historic inauguration of the Mishkan (the original portable Temple), the Tribal leaders seized the moment by spontaneously contributing elaborate gifts and offerings. Aaron the High Priest was left to the side and became despondent that he missed the opportunity.
God consoles him by saying that he will be eternally remembered for kindling the lights of the Menorah. The Ramban (1194-1270) asks why the lights of the Menorah were singled out if Aaron, on that inaugural day, brought many communal offerings. He answers that this was an allusion to the lights of Chanukah that would be kindled over a millennium later.
What emerges is an ironic fact of life. Often what we perceive to be historic quickly fades while seemingly minor moments leave an indelible impression. On the day of the inauguration, the tribal leaders brought gifts with great pomp and splendor. They then faded from history. What withstood the test of time was Aaron's little wick kindled diligently with consistency. It may have lacked the fanfare but it ultimately had the ingredients of a lasting, and impressive, legacy that still illuminates our mind, our soul, and our homes.
Shabbat Shalom! Rabbi Daniel Green
