Short Vort:  The Unsung Hero
We can all relate to the unsung hero. The Torah introduces us to one such figure: "Devorah, the wet nurse of Rivka died... and (Jacob) called the place the Tree of Much Weeping" (Bereishit 35:8). Why all the tears for an unknown woman? The Midrash comments that the Torah was alluding to the death of Rivka as well. Yaakov cried "much weeping" for both his mother and her wet-nurse.  Why were their legacies intertwined?

Our four matriarchs emerged from the vortex of immortality with great piety and integrity. What gave them the strength? Perhaps, it was the Devorah's of their past. The wet-nurse, the teacher, the friend, that provided a glimpse of clarity amid the chaos. Jacob recognized the debt he owed to the unsung heroes of his family's past. The Torah is asking us to pause and think who touched us along the way and who, in turn, we have touched.  With little fanfare we too can be Devorah.

Siyum for Rabbi W. Zev Eisenstein z'l

The 30 day period following the loss of a loved one is called Shloshim. During this time, we dedicate ourselves to spiritual and interpersonal growth. May we all strive to emulate the exceptional qualities of Rabbi Eisenstein a'h during this period and collectively fill the immeasurable void left from his loss. For those that are able, It is customary to conduct a Siyum - a ceremony marking the completion of an order of Mishnah (the ancient compendium of Oral Law) by the end of the Shloshim period.
