Short Vort: A Mountain View

Not only do mountain views inflate real estate prices, but apparently they also form the cornerstone of our Jewish religious experience.  The Torah was given specifically on a mountain. The Jerusalem Temple was erected on one as well.  In addition, when the Children of Israel first entered the Land, they gathered atop two mountains: Grizim and Eival.  One was lush and fertile, representing blessing. The other was barren, symbolizing the curses that accompany a life of futility.  Why was this ceremony, with its visuals, so essential?

Mountains represent our dreams and aspirations.  When we stand at the foot of a mountain, it's often difficult to see the summit.  Many times in life we struggle to climb to the peak, only to realize too late that we've picked the wrong one.  The key is to envision our end-game before the journey begins.

Mount Grizim and Eival shared the same topography and climate.  Yet, the result was worlds apart.  We need a discerning eye to see the summit but, more importantly, we need the vision and foresight to pick the right mountain.
