Short Vort:  When the Sky's the Limit

We are all struck by the seeming injustice of why Moshe could not enter the Holy Land. He personally relates how he impassionedly cried out to God only to be told that his pleas were "too much."

The Midrash attributes the rejection of Moshe's request to his reaction to Korach.  When Korach led an open rebellion against his leadership, and sought to personally usurp the High Priesthood, Moshe responds by saying his brazen aspirations were "too much."  Since Moshe placed constraints on Korach, he too was denied his hopes and dreams.  The question is obvious.  Korach's entire enterprise was corrupt and was overtly thwarted by direct Divine intervention (miraculous lighting bolts, earthquakes, etc.) How can the two possibly be compared!

The answer is striking. Although Korach's notorious character is undeniable, we should never deny a person's right to dream large in the realm of the spirit.  Moshe could have criticized Korach on so many grounds, but he had no right to disparage his spiritual aspirations - no matter how misplaced they may have seemed.

Moderation is a central Jewish value. Yet, there are times in life when we simply should not be satisfied.  The soul knows no physical constraints.  When it thirsts for more, never say "too much."

Shabbat Shalom!  Rabbi Green.                               For more Short Vorts click here
