In 1996, Jack Miles wrote a book titled God: A Biography. The book analyzes the character traits of God as the protagonist of the Torah. This exercise has value because imitating God is a very Jewish concept. The Torah instructs us to "Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am Holy" (Lev. 19:2) and to "Walk in His ways" (Deut. 13:5). The Talmud emphasizes that we should clothe the naked and visit the sick to emulate God's acts of kindness (see Sota 14a). If God cannot be physically observed or touched, why is this concept so central?
The Torah values not only our belief in God but, more importantly, the relationship we cultivate with Him. In fact, the Torah describes God in anthropomorphic terms precisely so we can identify with an infinite Being (see Berachot 31b). Our challenge is to see God in our everyday lives and feel His Divine Providence. There is no greater influence on our life than the friends we choose. God is our Friend, our Partner, and our Cheerleader. Once we realize we have a Friend in high places, who wouldn't want to be like Him?
Shabbat Shalom! Rabbi Daniel Green
