Taking a Dip in the Jordan
The most important things in life are beyond skin deep. The Torah describes Tzara'at, a skin ailment, that is the result of a spiritual imbalance. The Talmud associates the name with Tzar Ayin - a narrowness of perspective. The treatments include exile from the camp, presumably to focus on the value of community.
The Book of Kings describes how Na'aman, the General of Aram, approaches Elisha the Prophet to be cured from his Tzara'at. Elisha instructs him to immerse seven times in the Jordan River. Na'aman becomes enraged, scoffs at the idea, and remarks that there are many mightier rivers in Damascus. Eventually he is persuaded, immerses in the Jordan, and is healed. What precisely was Elisha trying to communicate?
The Jordan River connects the Kinneret in the North to the Dead Sea in the South. While the Kinneret is the giver, and the Dead Sea is the taker, the Jordan River is the great connector and facilitator. It runs the length of the nation insuring harmony and balance.
Sometimes in life we lose perspective and forget our vital role in the collective. The Jordan River is our reminder. Let's take a dip and enhance community together.
Shabbat Shalom! Rabbi Daniel Green
