The (Other) 5 Second Rule

IDF soldier, Lt. Col. Emanuel Moreinu, was the last Israeli casualty in the second Lebanon war.  His heroic faith and inspirational character is well known. Shortly before he was killed, he was on a military helicopter and turned to a fellow soldier. "If we are hit now we will have 5 remaining seconds of life," he said, "what will you think about in those 5 seconds?" His friend had no answer.  Moreinu responded, "if we don't know what to think about during those 5 seconds, perhaps we don't know what to reflect upon throughout life itself."  When asked what he would think about, Moreinu simply said Shema Yisrael.

Pharaoh and his armies find themselves literally stuck in the mud of the Red Sea, with walls of water on both sides. Moments before the waves come crashing down, Moshe readies himself to strike the waters.  As the Egyptians look on they experience a flash of clarity that comes a bit too late.  Perhaps these few seconds are the most poignant moment of the entire Exodus story.

May we appreciate the gift of life and keep the right perspective while we still enjoy the opportunity.
