How Can I Get Them to Listen?

Even in everyday life it's often challenging to listen.  It's therefore predictable that the Jewish slaves in Egypt were unable to hear Moshe's message of deliverance due to "shortness of breath"  (Exodus 6:10).  The Ramban (1194-1270) comments that they intellectual believed in redemption but simply couldn't process the information in their predicament.

The Ralbag (1288-1344)
, in a novel interpretation, interprets "shortness of breath" as referring to Moshe not the people.  After the initial humiliating setbacks in the liberation process, Moshe's "breath" lost its fervour. As a result, the nation failed to listen. To inspire, passion is a prerequisite.

Twice each day in our Shema we declare: "Let these words... be upon your hearts and teach them to your children" (Deut. 6:6). The Alshich (1508-1593
comments that the only way to perpetuate values is to first place them "on your heart."  Showing that you sincerely care is the only way to get anyone to truly listen.
