Not only does salt make it onto our tables for Shabbat and Yom Tov, but our relationship with God is defined as a Covenant of Salt (see Lev. 2:13, Num 18:19).
The symbolic significance of salt is also seen in the story of Sodom. Among God's limitless arsenal, He selects salt to destroy the ancient cities. Why?
Salt is the ultimate enhancer. It adds flavour to almost anything it encounters. Yet, it cannot be eaten independently. It cannot stand alone. Salt represents the ultimate giver - the attribute of "chessed."
Sodom is the lowest place on Earth. It receives the waters from all the lakes, rivers, and mountains - but there is no outlet. It never gives. All the sediment remains.
The people of Sodom embodied the characteristics of their geography. They embraced a Drawiniian approach to life and outlawed all forms of charity and giving. There destruction was characterised as a "reversal." They were transformed into their opposite - salt!
The Jewish outlook is that of Abraham - a Covenant of Salt. Be an enhancer, be a giver, and recognize we cannot stand alone.
Shabbat Shalom! - Rabbi Green
