How to Pick an Almond

The almond is featured prominently in Biblical tradition.  Jeremiah, in his initial vision as a prophet, sees the image of an almond. The fruit portrays the impending doom to befall the Jewish nation.

Rashi points out that almonds ripen in twenty-one days - symbolizing the three week calamitous period between the Fast of Tammuz on Tisha B'av.

What is fascinating is that not all almonds are the same.  Some begin bitter and gradually become sweet while others begin sweet only to grow more bitter each day.  Which variety ripens in 21 days?  Bitter almonds that grow sweeter by the moment.

As we begin our decent towards Tisha B'av, we recognize that it was not intended to be that way.  We confused our almonds and squandered our opportunities.

The Nation of Israel, after the Exodus, was poised to march into the Promised Land but got derailed on Tisha B'av - for no reason other than lack of faith.  They failed to rise to the moment.

The present is often an allusion. Bitterness is often the prelude for greatness. So crack open your almond, and envision the sweetness that will soon arrive.

In Search of Kidney Donors

A valued member of our community, Arie Pekar has inherited a genetic disorder from his mother Ilana (who is also in need of a kidney donation).  Since his diagnosis at the age of 21, the disease has slowly worn away at his kidney function.  He finds himself today, at age 35, needing a kidney transplant.  This past week he began dialysis - the same week his new baby son came into this world.

If you would like to get tested to see if your kidney may be a match for Arie or his mother Ilana, please email them at [email protected] . As well, please follow them on facebook www.facebook.com/MomAndMeNeedAKidney
