Are You Counting Up or Counting Down?
Whether it's the launch of a rocket, the start of a new year, or kids waiting for summer vacation, society at large celebrates new beginnings with a countdown. Why then do we relive our march to Sinai by "counting up" the 49 days of the Omer?
This reflects the Jewish attitude to life. Any meaningful or enduring new beginning needs a strong foundation. We don't simply wait for time to pass, we seize the moment. The hourglass of life is in constant flux. The greatest blessing is to be able to look at the lower bulb and appreciate each grain with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.
Each grain is elevated only if it falls on the grains that came before. So remember, always count up and keep on climbing higher!
