Hello again
Creativity coupled with necessity often drive small business owners and entrepreneurs to juggle more than one unrelated startup at the same time. These 'Simultaneous Entrepreneurs' are, in many ways, just hedging their bets.
By Dean Rotbart Editor-in-Chief

Despite what a majority of the textbooks and small business gurus recommend, many entrepreneurs and small business owners are nurturing two or more unrelated companies at the same time: Simultaneous Entrepreneurs.
It's hard enough to try to successfully advance a single enterprise. Failure rates for startups are wickedly high.
Blogging for The Wall Street Journal, Kate Mitchell co-founder of Scale Venture Partners and a so-called 'startup mentor,' recently cautioned against such dual loyalties:
"We have seen a handful of founders who are so extraordinarily talented that they can manage several of these processes in parallel, such as Elon Musk [PayPal, Tesla Motors and SpaceX] or Jack Dorsey [Twitter and Square]," Kate writes. "For most founders, achieving the first success is still on the to-do list, so focus is still very important." Kate concludes, therefore, that more founders are "serial entrepreneurs rather than simultaneous entrepreneurs."
Kate, of course is wrong.
In an ideal world, a founder/visionary should work one vision - one enterprise - to success before venturing forth to create another.
In the real world, in which most of the entrepreneurs I meet and associate with live, that seldom is possible.

Business Slickers: The Tale of Curly Washburn and Southwest Airlines
Each and every business, regardless of its size, has a key performance indicator that, if properly identified and pursued, will lead it to meaningful and durable financial success.
 | |
Curly Knows Best
|
In perhaps the best-remembered scene of the 1991 comedy City Slickers, starring Billy Crystal and Jack Palance, crusty trail boss Curly Washburn (Palance) offers some sage advice to 39-year-old Mitch Robbins (Crystal), who is in the midst of a full-bore midlife crisis:
Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is?
Mitch: No what?
Curly: (Holding up his gloved index finger) This.
Mitch: Your finger?
Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don't mean sh#%.
Mitch: That's great, but what's the one thing?
Curly: That's what you've got to figure out.
Palance won the Academy Award for his performance. It's a portrayal that business owners and entrepreneurs would be well advised to study.
Each and every successful business in America lives or dies based upon its own, unique, "key performance indicator" - that 'one thing' that if the owners and managers correctly identify and pursue, will drive their enterprise to meaningful and durable financial success.
What's that one thing for your business? Well, as Curly said, "that's what you've got to figure out."
Don't worry. We can help.
To illustrate the application of "the one thing" key performance indicator in business, a great role model is Southwest Airlines, which for 40 consecutive years has posted an annual profit.
Indeed, since its founding in 1967, Southwest Airlines has risen steadily, with annual revenues exceeding $16 billion, generated by more than 45,000 employees.
In short, Southwest Airlines sticks to its key performance indicator and success naturally follows.
Southwest Airlines has honed its business model such that its C-Suite executives know that every flight the airline puts into the skies is profitable. To measure and forecast their performance, all the top brass really have to know is how many flights are - and will - be airborne. Period.
