The First Movie In History?

The first movie of history 1896

The first movie of history 1896

Arrival of train at Ciotat

The film is associated with an urban legend well known in the world of cinema.

The story goes that when the film was first shown, the audience was so overwhelmed by the moving image of a life-sized train coming directly at them that people screamed and ran to the back of the room.

Hellmuth Karasek in the German magazine Der Spiegel wrote that the film "had a particularly lasting impact; yes, it caused fear, terror, even panic."

However, some have doubted the veracity of this incident such as film scholar and historian Martin Loiperdinger (de) in his essay, "Lumiere's Arrival of the Train: Cinema's Founding Myth".

Whether or not it actually happened, the film undoubtedly astonished people in the audience who were unaccustomed to the amazingly realistic illusions created by moving pictures.

The Lumière brothers clearly knew that the effect would be dramatic if they placed the camera on the platform very close to the arriving train.

More On Dance - This Time "They Dance Alone"

Sting - They Dance Alone (Cueca Solo)
Sting - They Dance Alone (Cueca Solo)

Another reader writes to tell us more on the topic of dancing.

But, this time on a more serious note, she includes a copy of Sting's "Cueca Solo" (They Dance Alone)

First published on his 1987 album Nothing Like The Sun it refers to mourning Chilean women who dance the Cueca, the national dance of Chile, alone with photographs of their disappeared loved ones in their hands.

Sting explained his song as a symbolic gesture of protest against the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet whose regime killed thousands of people between 1973 and 1990.

On the album Sting was accompanied by Mark Knopfler (guitar) and Ruben Blades (background vocals and guitar).

There are several live versions of this song, most notable from the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute (1988), from an Amnesty International concert (1988) in Buenos Aires with Peter Gabriel

and the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo from Chile. Artists performing included Sting, Jackson Browne, Wynton Marsalis, Sinéad O'Connor, Peter Gabriel, and New Kids on the Block.

So You Think You Can Dance Amazes Again

DuShaunt "Fik-Shun" Stegall - So You Think You Can Dance

Season 10 (LA Audition)

So You Think You Can Dance premiered on July 20, 2005 with over ten million viewers and ended the summer season as the top-rated show on television.

It was created by American Idol producers Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe and the first season was hosted by current American news personality Lauren Sánchez.

Since the second season, it has been hosted by former British children's television personality and one-time game show MC Cat Deeley. During its second season, the program remained the No. 1 rated summer show for adults aged 18-49.

The series was created to rejuvenate the visibility and appreciation of dance as an art form in the U.S. and to give exposure to struggling dancers.

Series judge Mary Murphy says, "Of course you hope you can make a living at it, because you don't want to give up on something that you do, but the honest truth is most dancers have to carry one or two jobs and dance as much as they can on the side -- it's a very lucky dancer who gets a full scholarship."

Season 10 commenced on 14 May 2013 and true to form included exceptional and novel artists including Du-Shaunt Stegall who dances under the name "Fik=Shun"
