The Berlin Secretary Cabinet

The Roentgens' Berlin Secretary Cabinet
The Roentgens' Berlin Secretary Cabinet

David Roentgen was born 1743 in Moravia, a historical region in the centre of Europe and was famed throughout Europe for his marquetry and his secret drawers and mechanical fittings. His work embraces the late Rococo and the Neo-classical styles.

He learned his trade in his father's workshop, and succeeded to the paternal business in 1772, when he entered into some kind of partnership with the clockmaker Kintzing.

In time he made his way to France where he began to distribute his works. He was first and foremost an astute man of business, and Paris was the style centre of Europe.

Before very long Marie Antoinette appointed him her bniste mechanicien. He appears, indeed, to have acquired considerable favour with the queen, for on several occasions she took advantage of his journeys through Europe to charge him with the delivery of presents and of dolls dressed in the Paris fashions of the moment; they were intended to serve as patterns for the dressmakers to her mother and her sisters.

Roentgen did not confine his activities to Paris, or even to France. It has been said that he travelled about Europe accompanied by furniture vans, and undoubtedly his aptitude as a commercial traveller was remarkable. He had shops in Berlin and Saint Petersburg, and himself apparently twice went to Russia.

The Berlin Secretary Cabinet is one of his more spectacular pieces and the incredible thing is that it was all done by hand, and it all still works.

Winston Churchill's "Misogyny" Speeches

Winston S Churchill: We Shall Fight on the Beaches
Winston S Churchill: We Shall Fight on the Beaches

Robust parliamentary debate has often been the hallmark of Westminster style government.

"Winston" said Lady Nancy Astor "If you were my husband, I'd put poison in your coffee."

"Nancy, if you were my wife, I'd drink it." replied Churchill.

Or to take another exchange between Churchill and Bessie Braddock MP

"Mr Churchill, you are drunk" - to which replied Churchill "And you madam are ugly, but tomorrow I shall be sober"

Another story relates that during a visit to America, Winston Churchill was invited to a buffet luncheon at which cold fried chicken was served.

Returning for a second helping, he asked politely, "May I have some breast?"

"Mr Churchill," replied the hostess, "in this country we ask for white meat or dark meat." Churchill apologized profusely.

The following morning, the lady received a magnificent orchid from her guest of honour. The accompanying card read: "I would be most obliged if you would pin this on your white meat."

Are these examples of wit, wordplay or (new definition) misogyny?

No matter, when it came to making important speeches Churchill was a master.

The Lesula Monkey Discovery
Human Like Monkey is Discovered in Africa - Lesula
Human Like Monkey is Discovered in Africa - Lesula

To suggest that Lesula Monkey is the winner of the Top 10 Newly Discovered Species of 2012 is to suggest that being listed is a competition.

But to ask if Lesula is one of the most interesting is another question, particularly if you are fascinated by the origins of mankind.

Spotted by researchers in the Lomami Basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2007, the Lesula Monkey is only the second new species of monkey found in Africa in the past 28 years.

Conservationist John Hart and a team of scientists first spotted a juvenile female at the home of a primary school teacher in the town of Opala. The teacher had received the monkey from a family member who had killed the youngster's mother.

What fascinates most about this monkey are how human it looks and how uncannily human-like are its eyes. Sad then that it is already in danger of being hunted for "Bushmeat"

Quentin Wheeler , an Arizona State University researcher, who specializes in discovering new species and figuring out how they fit into the evolutionary history of life on Earth says "There are a lot of scientists now that think we could lose 50 per cent of the species on earth before the end of the 21st century,"

"I find it ironic that we're spending so much money on these telescopes to hunt for Earth-like planets while we're allowing the most Earth-like planet of all to be decimated."

Kenneth Williams Thought for The Day

Best quote from Kenneth Williams EVER
Best quote from Kenneth Williams EVER

In an age when many self-development books advise us to specialise we invite you to hear Kenneth Williams thoughts on the topic.

They're short and sharp and take just 27 seconds.

Kenneth was an English comic actor and comedian; much loved by the British public. His professional career began in 1948 in repertory theatre.

Failure to become a serious dramatic actor disappointed him, but his potential as a comic performer gave him his break when he was spotted playing the Dauphin in George Bernard Shaw's St Joan in 1954 by radio producer Dennis Main Wilson.

Main Wilson was casting Hancock's Half Hour, a radio series starring Tony Hancock. Playing mostly funny voice roles, Williams stayed in the series almost to the end, five years later.

Despite the success and recognition the show brought him, Williams thought theatre, film and television were superior forms of entertainment.
