For Us The Mona Lisa Smiled

Arc De TriompheTo visit Paris is to relive a memory, a previous visit not required.

There is an instant nostalgia you feel as a couple in Paris. The words from Casablanca, "We will always have Paris," seem to have been written for you alone.

The feeling builds as you stroll up the Champs Elysees toward the Arc de Triomphe.

The avenue seems endless; the Arc looms in a blue haze, seeming always in the far distance. You move as if in slow-motion, the focus of some hidden camera, other strollers just figures in a blurred background.

Paris seemed our private "parc"

For us alone its charm beguiled

For us the Champs stretched to the Arc

For us the Mona Lisa smiled

Quirky Quips by David Cummings

I used to be indecisive - but now I'm not sure.

The Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy

If you think you are familiar with the Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy here is something to make you prick up your ears and listen again.

This video clip shows what it sounds like when all the instruments are made of glass; and when the whole piece is played by just two people, who spend all their time standing up.

The piece is played by GlassDuo on a glass harp - a very rare and extraordinary instrument.

It's the only glass music group in Poland, one of a very few professional ensembles in the world. The Musicians play in duo and with various chamber ensembles and even symphony orchestras.

GlassDuo's glass harp is the largest professional glass harp in the world and is not made up of glasses containing water, but very high quality glasses of differing sizes.

Here's some conundrums to start off your week..

A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't eaten in 3 years. Which room is safest for him?

~~~~~
A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over five minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?
~~~~~

What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and grey when you throw it away ?

We'll give you the answers later this week.

Those of you smart enough to work them out please feel free to let us know on answers@yesletshelp.org - No prize, but you'll know we know your alert.

I'll Buy You A Diamond Ring My Friend

If it keeps you satisfied..

While in Paris, the Beatles stayed at the five star George V hotel and had an upright piano moved into one of their suites so that song writing could continue.

It was here that McCartney wrote "Can't Buy Me Love."

The song was written under the pressure of the success achieved by "I Want to Hold Your Hand" which had just reached number one in America.

When producer George Martin first heard "Can't Buy Me Love" he felt the song needed changing: "I thought that we really needed a tag for the song's ending, and a tag for the beginning; a kind of intro.

So I took the first two lines of the chorus and changed the ending, and said 'Let's just have these lines, and by altering the second phrase we can get back into the verse pretty quickly.'"

And they said, "That's not a bad idea, we'll do it that way".

The song's verse is a twelve bar blues in structure, a formula that the Beatles seldom applied to their own material.

Four Candles - The Two Ronnies

Seems we started something with our Tommy Cooper tribute.

Suddenly every man and his dog has sent in video clips featuring British comics from yester-year.

This was one of the funniest so we had to publish it, even though it's a bit long.

It makes great use of the famed British Double Entendre (fancy words for a pun), so it's no surprise this was sent to us by a Pom residing in New Zealand.

Anyway we invite you to give it a try and hope it starts your week with a big smile.

Sir Winston Churchill Loved Them

Winston ChurchillWe are not talking about Whisky & Cigars - Though we concede he was fond of these too.

No, we are talking about "Paraprosdokians", and some we expect have never even heard of the word. Winston though, loved them.

As usual Wikipedia reveals all, telling us that they are "A figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part"

Straightforward enough, so let's have some examples:-

  - Where there's a will, I want to be in it.

  - The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list.

  - If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

  - War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

  - I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

  - Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a
     fruit salad.

  - Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in

    a garage makes you a car.

  - You're never too old to learn something stupid - Like what a

    paraprosdokian is.
