Four Candles - The Two Ronnies

The two ronnies - Fork handles

Seems we started something with our Tommy Cooper tribute.

Suddenly every man and his dog has sent in video clips featuring British comics from yester-year.

This was one of the funniest so we had to publish it, even though it's a bit long.

It makes great use of the famed British Double Entendre (fancy words for a pun), so it's no surprise this was sent to us by a Pom residing in New Zealand.

Anyway we invite you to give it a try and hope it starts your week with a big smile.

Quirky Quips by David Cummings

I used to be indecisive - but now I'm not sure.

The Greatest Speech Ever?

On 27th March 1931 Charlie Chaplin received the French Legion of Honour, one of the highest awards made in France. Perhaps they had an insight into the speech he would give at the end his movie "The Great Dictator"

There was a vast amount of publicity around the film, with a critic for the New York Times calling it "the most eagerly awaited picture of the year", and it was one of the biggest money-makers ever.

Chaplin concluded the film with a six-minute speech in which he looked straight at the camera and professed his personal beliefs.

The speech continues to attract attention to this day and some even saying "The greatest speech ever".

The Great Dictator received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor.

Sir Winston Churchill Loved Them

Winston ChurchillWe are not talking about Whisky & Cigars - Though we concede he was fond of these too.

No, we are talking about "Paraprosdokians", and some we expect have never even heard of the word. Winston though, loved them.

As usual Wikipedia reveals all, telling us that they are "A figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part"

Straightforward enough, so let's have some examples:-

  - Where there's a will, I want to be in it.

  - The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list.

  - If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

  - War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

  - I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

  - Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a
     fruit salad.

  - Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in

a garage makes you a car.

  - You're never too old to learn something stupid - Like what a

    paraprosdokian is.

Lots of LoveBack in 1974 Nanette Newman wrote a book called Lots of Love

   tired.

- Why do all those fhoot ballers kis each other on the Telly. They're not

married - they're not even engaged.

And here are some that show that kids haven't:-

- My Mother ses she's cold and then she makes me put on a coat

Happy Birthday Tommy

Tommy Cooper
Tommy Cooper "Magic Cloak"

Cooper was a member of The Magic Circle, and respected by traditional magicians.

Famed for his red fez, his appearance was large and lumbering at 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) and more than 15 stone (95 kg) in weight.

Tommy was born in Caerphilly, South Wales and was delivered by the woman who owned the house in which the family was lodging.

His parents were Welsh-born army recruiting sergeant father Thomas H. Cooper, and his English-born wife Gertrude (ne Gertrude C. Wright) from Crediton, Devon.

In light of the heavily polluted air and the offer of a job for his father, the family moved to Exeter, Devon, when Cooper was three and gained the West Country accent that was part of his act.

Tommy was famed for his straight faced delivery of one liners and puns such as "A cowboy walks into a German Car showroom and says "Audi"" and "I went into a shop to buy a goldfish - the guy said "Do you want an aquarium" I Said "I don't care what star sign it is"
