Just Say Yes: SoulCollage® Gave Me the Nerve to Sing My Songs in Mid-Life

I am the music that has been hidden in the walls for many years. I live on even when buildings are vacant; I can fill a room with joy. I am an instrument that longs to play the old melodies. I am a space that may appear vacant, but I have memories.
Using the SoulCollage® process with my personal deck of cards has given me the confidence to explore new parts of myself. Without it, I don't know how I would have found the courage to surrender to a very odd and unexpected internal process that happened last year. I can see now that I trusted my inner wisdom and guidance - as SoulCollage® has taught me to do - even though on the outside, nothing seemed to make sense.
In August 2014, song lyrics and melodies suddenly began flooding my mind. I had never written a song - nor wanted to - and had never even sung in public, but these songs seemed to come out of nowhere. I was busy at work during the day, but in the middle of the night I was awakened by a poetic phrase or a little tune. I realized that I if I was to get any sleep at all, I had better at least write down the words. It was fascinating to me that the songs had themes of connectedness, openheartedness and spiritual awareness. They were comforting and soothing.
As the Universe would have it, I serendipitously ran into a woman, a voice coach in my city, with whom I hadn't spoken in twenty years. She said she had been thinking about me. I explained my middle-of-the-night music experiences and she offered to help. She asked me to sing these songs into my iPhone and bring them to her. Even though I was baffled by all this, I had my first instinct to trust the process and did as she suggested. Soon the songs were coming full bore. She introduced me to Vic, a wonderful man who owns a recording studio, and suddenly I found myself in front of a microphone with a man I didn't know, singing songs that I knew came from Spirit but were mine to bring into the world.
And none of it made sense. I was 58 years old and terrified, certain I would throw up before I got through the first song. I felt so vulnerable using my untrained and inexperienced voice. In fact, I told my husband that I would rather have stood in my underwear in front of Vic than to sing into a professional microphone in front of him! That first song, Sacred Circle (click here to listen), is about the sacredness of the drumming circle, I've led for many years and how that circle allowed me to be fully myself. The song has turned out to be more of a chant, which women now regularly sing in Circles I lead. So I am grateful I mustered up the courage to persevere.
I was stretched in every way possible during those months. In January 2015, my twelve-song CD, Raven's Light, was completed. Recently I was able to use some of the songs in a Spring Equinox event that I hosted with other artists and musicians. It has been one of the highlights of my life to hear others singing along with the songs. On May 9, several of my songs will be used in a ceremony to support women who have lost children or were never able to have them. I am honored beyond words to be able to now add a musical element to my work. Interestingly, themes of music and healing emerged in SoulCollage® cards I had made years before this all happened. For instance, I had a dream about music coming out of the walls which was so profound that I made a SoulCollage® card (at the beginning of this article) the next morning.
Singer was a New Year's surprise, made two years later at my annual women's gathering to collage our big dreams for the year. At first I saw this exciting, expressive card as being more about engaging with fun and community, but now I see it too as a predictor of the songs that would later be placed in my heart.
I Am One Who dances and sings to my heart's content. I sing my songs freely, like a bird, with no thought as to how the song sounds. I move with grace within the circle of my community. I find my rightful place in the circle of life. I know the freedom of flight. I sparkle from the inside out. I recognize my connection to all living beings. I move with ease in my body.
I have made over 200 SoulCollage® cards in the past eight years and have taught many classes and workshops along the way. SoulCollage® has been a life-changing process for me and for many others I know. It isn't just about making cards! SoulCollage® teaches us about parts of ourselves we had no idea existed and trusting the process as it unfolds. SoulCollage® is about honoring our own diversity so that we can offer the world what we came here to contribute. SoulCollage® is about being brave even when we are really scared and about supporting each other in the process. For me, SoulCollage® has been about creating a rich and amazing life and I am forever grateful.
"I Am One Who looks forward to whatever is still to come."
