"Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present
and not giving it." -Willliam Arthur Ward
Gratitude comes up a lot in this season. Probably we ought to make this the theme of every season of our lives, or at least hold that intention. This is not always easy for many people, especially those who tend to notice quickly how a glass is half empty but seldom appreciate all the ways it is half full.
Today I drew a Community card of mine, one called "99", and it's for an old woman I knew named Louise. You can find this card and a full reading from it on page 127 in the SoulCollage® Evolving book. Her message was, and is each time I draw this card, "Cherish your interruptions!" This always feels a bit disturbing, as I like things to be predictable, and I work hard to make them so. Yet it is also always exciting as a direction that I dearly want to follow. I want to cherish my interruptions and find the surprise and value in them, and I want to be grateful for whatever comes my way. As Rumi says, "...meet them at the door laughing and invite them in...each has been sent as a guide from beyond."
The day before yesterday I dove into the middle of a dog fight on my kitchen floor, a fight between my hundred-pound golden retriever and my fifteen- year-old beloved mutt. All three of us flailed around for a minute or two until I got them separated and the aggressor thrown out the door. However, I discovered a while later, (after my fury and shock wore off), that my old body had been injured in the fray. The next day the doc looked at my badly bruised and very swollen upper arm and pronounced it a torn tendon.
As I waited for my ride to take me back home, I called in my Grateful Self and she pointed out to my Pouting Self , "Thank goodness it's your left arm, and thank goodness the dogs are OK, and thank goodness this happened now rather than the day before you leave for Arizona, and thank goodness you have Medicare and it didn't cost a penny." I agree, Grateful Self. And my arm is healing really fast with your positive support.
It's actually true that Gratefulness can be a healing force. So, if you don't have gratitude represented in your deck yet, make one for your personal Grateful Self and one for archetypal Gratitude. Practice calling on them often. You might think of gathering a group during the holidays, to make cards intentionally for these Neters. There are not many Neters that I recommend that every deck contain, but these are two that I do.
