Principal's Message

May 14, 2013

Dear Encinal Families,

A sincere thank you and a few fun things to remember this week:

1. Chores for Change - Thank you, thank you for supporting your children's efforts during the Chores for Change campaign. Through this campaign the kids have experienced the importance of taking the time to do something meaningful for others. It has given them a real-world appreciation for compassion, support, and engagement. It was also great running into some families and staff at the Stanford Blood Donation Center this past week in support of this important cause.

The campaign resulted in over $6200 (and still counting) raised to help fight cancer, blood donations made in honor of Tyler, a family who is "overwhelmed with gratitude", and student confidence and pride in knowing that their empathy and hard work is something to be celebrated.
In the next few weeks, kids will be delighted to see key stakeholders kiss the pig in celebration for what we have accomplished here at Encinal!

In the meantime, thank you to all those who worked behind the scenes to make this happen: Nicole Scott, Holly Thompson, Mari Chazen, Sara Richter, Jen Nelson, Anna Chow, Mr and Mrs Jonas, Lara Sellers, Darcy Leschly, Kim Steere, Jodi Patzer, Deanna Schroder, and Megan Freiermuth. And special thanks to our young heros: Tyler Nelson and Gabriel Chow who, through this process, have reminded us that takes courage and determination to fight for something important.

It's truly awe inspiring to see so many Encinal kids and families so engaged in great things - all this helps make Encinal a great place for kids!

2.  Are You In For Some Fun?
I am pleased to announce that after 18 years of success with Oak Knoll's Otter Run, parents from the Menlo Park City School District have expanded the much loved run into a district-wide event:  the "are you in RUN for education."   This 1.5K walk/fun run and competitive 5K will be held on Sunday, June 2 at Oak Knoll School starting at 9:00 am. The race will be followed by a Health and Wellness Fair for all to enjoy.  Proceeds from the event will benefit Encinal, along with Hillview, Laurel and Oak Knoll. Having healthy fun as a community is what this event is all about, and is supported by many local businesses such as Bulldog Sports and Fitness, Vivre Fitness and long standing supporter Fleet Feet Sports.

To get the kids excited, we are holding a "Crazy Running Outfit" day at Encinal on May 29th.  So have your kids start choosing an outfit!

For more information and to register for the run, click here. Hurry because $25 early registration is available only until Friday, May 17th.
So....are you in? I am! I hope to see you there.

3. Ducky's Car Wash Splash Cards - This is a great way to save money on future car washes at Ducky's and support Encinal.  For every $20 Splash Card you buy, you get two car washes valued at $38.49, plus $100 in coupons and Encinal receives $7. Buy online here or bring a check and the paper form that came in your child's green folder last week to the office.  Deadline to purchase cards is this Friday, May 17th.  If you have any questions, please email MaryAnn, Business Alliance Coordinator.

4. Encinal Garden Workday
Join other Encinal families to help clear out beds in the Encinal Garden as we start to get ready for next Fall's Harvest Festival.  Ice cream snacks will be provided to all workers.  Please sign up here or email the Garden team with any questions.

Sincerely,
Sharon Burns
