Principal's Spotlight on Learning

Congratulations Encinal on your Kent Award!

I am very pleased to announce that Encinal's 4th and 5th grade Advisory Program has been selected to receive a Kent Award from the San Mateo County School Boards Association!  An upcoming Awards Dinner, held at the Foster City Crowne Plaza, will be on May 20, 2013 honoring all the recipients.  These awards are named after the past County Superintendent of Schools for San Mateo County, J. Russell Kent.

Advisory is a sixty minute period on Tuesday afternoons where groups of 4th and 5th graders engage in community building activities and student-led, problem-based learning projects aimed at improving Encinal School. This year, students participated in one of the following program choices: Mad Scientist, Arcade Game Creation, Encinal Newspaper Write, Rollercoaster Design, Drama, Lifebook Journals, Poetry, Yoga, Accepting our Differences, Cooking, Running, Sewing, Encinal Student Leadership, Rock Songwriting/CD Making, Art Around Town, Music Videos and Song Writing for Success. See Encinal's website for additional information about our wonderful Advisory program.

Congratulations to our amazing teachers and school counselor for running this program and for the PTO for providing funding for each of the advisories. This is a great example of Encinal's continued commitment to innovation in education.

Just a reminder that your child's report card will go home on Friday, April 5th. In the envelope you will find a letter from me on Encinal's "State of Nest" highlighting various aspects of this past trimester and upcoming news and focuses for the 2012-2013 school year.

Sincerely,

Ms. Burns

**For newcomers and those interested in training to become Cornerstone study group facilitators**

Building developmental assets in our children might be some of the most important work we do as parents. Developmental assets are the positive values, relationships, skills and experiences kids need to thrive. The more a child has, the stronger, more resilient the child will be now and as an adult. How can we help build assets? What is most important in helping my child succeed in school academically and in life? How can I show my child I support their efforts and dreams? Come to this 6-week parent study group series, Take It Personally, to find out!

Please RSVP to Pam Larkin at pdl@motionio.com. See you there!

The Red Carpet is Coming to Menlo Park!

Extreme By Design, A Documentary Film & Panel Discussion
Thursday, April 18, 2013, 6:15pm-8:45pm, Hillview PAC

The new documentary film Extreme By Design, airing nationwide on PBS later this year, will have its premiere at the Hillview Performing Arts Center in a very special event for our District. The hour-long movie follows a band of Stanford University students who design products and services to change the lives of the world's poorest citizens. Using design thinking methods to maximize innovation, these students delve into real world problems, the results of which are actual implementation and real change. Ralph King, Jr., Extreme By Design filmmaker and Pulitzer Prize nominee, will open the screening, and a panel of Menlo Park City School District teachers and administrators, graduate students and the film producer will follow with a discussion on how both Stanford and MPCSD students are using design thinking to tackle challenges big and small with an innovator's mindset.
