See you back at Encinal on January 7th

Dear Encinal Families

On behalf of the entire Encinal staff, we want to wish all of our families a happy holiday season.  I am so proud of our wonderful music teachers and students who spent many recesses and lunches jamming with our students to have them ready to lead last week's Winter Sing.  I must admit that I was a little teary during "All you need is Love" and am so thankful that we were able to come together as a community and just sing and dance with our kids.  We are truly blessed.

After a well deserved break, our staff is looking forward to hitting the ground running in January.
  • Award winning author John Delandsteer will be here in the new year as upper grade teachers engage in professional development around going deeper into our curriculum with depth, complexity, rigor and creativity.
  • We will continue to focus on building writing stamina with all of our students and have already seen tremendous growth in student writing.
  • Dr. Carol Dweck will be speaking at Hillview on January 29th,
  • Dr. Lit, author of The Bus Kids, will be joining our Jan. 30th School Site Council Meeting.
  • 15 students will compete in Encinal's first Scripps Spelling Bee on January 11th.

Have a safe and happy holiday. We look forward to seeing all of our Eagles back here on January 7th.

Sincerely,
Sharon Burns

Information to Know

emergencyPlease Review Encinal Emergency Preparedness Procedures

Encinal School is committed to the safety of our students. Please take a few minutes to become familiar with Encinal's Emergency Preparedness Procedures.  These procedures are for all major emergencies including earthquakes, fires, and lock down situations.

When you registered your child for school, you were required to fill out an Emergency ID tag which named adults who are authorized to pick up your child in case of emergency.  If you'd like to add or edit names to this tag, you may do so by downloading and filling out this form and turning it into the Encinal office to process.

Make Snowflakes to Support Sandy Hook Elementary

If families are looking for a way to support those affected by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary school, here is a family-friendly suggestion offered by the National PTA and Connecticut PTSA.

Welcome Students to a Winter Wonderland
When school resumes for Sandy Hook, it will be in a new building. Parent-volunteers are working to ensure that the students are welcomed back by a winter wonderland with the entire school decorated with as many unique snowflakes as possible. We encourage senders to be as creative as possible, remembering that no two snowflakes are alike. Please make and send snowflakes by January 12, 2013 to the Connecticut PTSA address at the end of this email.

Please send all snowflakes and donations to:
Connecticut PTSA
60 Connolly Parkway
Building 12, Suite 103
Hamden, CT 06514

PTO Board Nominating Committee: Interested in a volunteer opportunity, know other parents who might be interested in doing more for the PTO Board, are you a connector?  If you answered yes to any of these questions and have time to participate, submit your name to join the Encinal Nominating Committee. This committee will have monthly meetings from January to April.  As part of this committee, you would receive suggestions for persons to serve as PTO Board officers next school year, brainstorm potential nominees and help to contact potential nominees to confirm their willingness to serve.  This committee will then present the slate of officers to the Executive Board in April and at the General Membership Meeting in May. Contact Robin Soran to submit your name or for more questions.
