Principal's Message

writergirl
Dear Encinal Families,

We are off to an amazing start with our focus on Writer's Workshop this year. We know good writing instruction is grounded in tasks that are authentic, meaningful, and relevant to the student.  As I spent time in all classrooms this week, students were engaged with creating memory list books and recalling events and times in their lives that had strong emotions attached to them.  This exercise generates lots of ideas to write about as students focus on writing personal narratives this Fall.  Even our kindergarteners were busy drawing about events in their lives!  I can't wait to read their writing and hear their stories!

Sincerely,

Principal Burns

13 days to go! Are you IN for Encinal? We are counting on your encinal shopping bag donation by Sept 27th to fund our PTO programs for this school year. Please take the time to DONATE NOW so that we have the funds we need at the start of the school year. Plus, you'll receive a free Encinal bag as a thank you gift!

Thank you to all of you who have already donated. Don't forget to consider Corporate Matching. Make your PTO donation go twice as far by submitting it for corporate matching from your employer. Last year, Encinal PTO received an additional $10,000 through corporate matching.

One of the most frequently asked questions about the "Are You In" joint campaign is "Why does my family need to support both the Encinal PTO and the MPAEF?"  It can be confusing.  These two organizations are partners and both support Encinal, but they are complementary - each with a different funding focus.

  • The PTOs fund specific school-based programs, supplies and events that are important to Encinal's community of students, teachers, and parents.
  • The Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation raises money for the District's operating budget.  The MPAEF's grant to the District funds classroom teachers (9 this year!) and the District's credentialed librarians, art teachers, music teachers, and elementary science aides.  This funding is essential to maintaining small class sizes and a comprehensive curriculum.

survey
Please Help "Safe Routes to Schools"
Complete a Transportation Survey by Sept 21st

Last week your child's teacher conducted a survey of students to determine how many kids walk, bike, carpool or take the bus. This is an important aspect of the District's Safe Routes to Schools funding. Parents can help by filling out an online survey about how kids get to school and why. Thanks to the families who already completed the survey. If you haven't filled it out already, please take 5 minutes and do so here.  The district that gets the highest parent participation rate wins 150 bike helmets!

Questions? Please contact Kathy Schrenk, Transportation Safety Coordinator.
