Newsletter for the Winnequah School Community - April 2016
In This Issue
From Ann Schroeder
We had fun doing friendly April Fool's Day jokes with students on Friday.  The no recess on a sunny day April Fool's joke went over very well.  We welcome the nice weather April brings.  As we wind up the school year over the next 10 weeks, let's all encourage a strong finish for students.  Homework routines, bedtime routines, outdoor play along with daily attendance, positive behavior all help students stay on track.

Our Mock Tornado Drill will occur on April 14 at 1:45; students will practice our procedures along with schools across Wisconsin.

The kindergarten teachers and I look forward to meeting 4K parents at the evening meeting on April 14 at 5:45 to share information about kindergarten.  This parents only night allows teachers to focus on providing information about kindergarten, touring the kindergarten classrooms, and answering questions parents may have as they prepare their children for a full day academic program.

Summer School enrichment class online registration is April 19th starting at 5:00 PM through your Infinite Campus Portal Account, so please make sure your parent portal is activated and you are able to log on.

Enjoy Spring!

2nd Grade - State Reports
Second grade students have been busy preparing and presenting state reports.

Second Grade - Trip to the Overture Center
On March 15, all Winnequah second graders took a field trip to the Overture Center to see a live performance of The Wizard of Oz. They learned about staging, costuming, and the time involved in putting together such an incredible performance.   Everyone was especially amazed with Toto, Dorothy's dog.  He was so good through the entire performance, sitting quietly in Dorothy's basket the entire time.

3rd Grade Celebrates Read Across America Week
Mrs. Brown's class loved celebrating books during Read Across America week! Missy from Parks and Rec came and read Wacky Wednesday by Dr. Seuss. We found SO many Wacky things throughout the book.

4th Grade Update
April is a busy month for fourth graders this year!  Fourth grade families can mark their calendars and look forward to some exciting field trips and fun events!  We will be visiting and taking a tour of the Capitol building, the Historical Museum, and the Veteran's Museum early in the month.  We will also be taking a trip to the UW Campus later in the month to participate in a Related Arts field trip.  Last, but certainly not least, we will be planning and hosting a bake sale on April 29th for the rest of the school in order to gain some business/entrepreneurial know-how and sharpen our decimal skills.

Thanks for ALL THAT YOU DO!

Online Registration for 2016-17
Watch for an e-mail message from Infinite Campus coming to you in April.  Online registration for 2016-17 currently enrolled students will begin May 1st!

During the Online Registration, you should review each demographic area and update, remove, or add anything no longer current.  (Demographics are such things as address, cell/work phone numbers, etc.)

Part of the online registration includes the Release Agreement-Directory Data Disclosure Authorization.  This is very confusing.  Our goal is to make it easier for everyone to understand.

How is this information used?
School staff uses this information whenever we publish your child's name, photo, and/or grade in such information as the yearbook, newsletter, classroom/hallway work, the newspaper, honor roll and graduation publications.  This could also include information shown on-line.

How can I see what is currently withheld?
You will see "Permission to Withhold Info" in the index -  a Zero (0) means that this information can be released.  A One (1) means that this information is being withheld.

If I want to allow schools to include all information, what do I choose?
You will want to choose #1, Yes, you may release directory data for my student.

Am I required to change this information every year?
No, you are not.  You may SKIP this section if you are not making a change.

Does the school publish a student directory?
No the school does not publish a directory, although you may be asked to share information in your child's classroom, or with PTO.

If you have any questions, please call your child's school office.

Math 24 Meet
On Tuesday, March 8 the Winnequah 4th grade Math 24 team went to Union South on the Madison campus to compete in the Dane County Math 24 Meet.  The meet consisted of 4
rounds of 15 minutes during which each of 3 players tried to solve the most math 24 problems.

Here are some reflections on how the day went.

Ezra said, "It was hard and challenging to earn cards because some people were fast!"

Abby said, "I was surprised to see how good some people were."

"It was challenging," explained Marcella.

Katelyn suggested, "I liked how competitive some kids were and some were not."

Dylan also mentioned, "It was fun and challenging."

Sam's explanation was, "I saw how good some people were and how to get better!."

Destination Imagination
Winnequah School was represented by two teams at the Blackhawk Regional Destination Imagination Tournament. Both teams competed in the Technical Challenge and made their own vehicles to transport teams across the stage.

Out of a field of five teams, the third grade team, The Freedom Four, took 3rd place.  The  fifth grade team, The Space Owls won second place and will advance to the State Tournament in Stevens Point.

We congratulate both our teams, and good luck to the Space Owls at the April tournament!

Outgrown Clothes?

Do you have old winter clothes that your child has out grown or will by next winter? We'd love to have them to use for students who have lost or cannot afford winter gear. We will even take infant/toddler and older child/bigger sizes for the MG Closet.

Thanks for considering
