Newsletter for the Winnequah School Community - June 2015

From Ann Schroeder, Principal
Bike riding, dandelion picking, walks to the park...hope your summer break is full of simple pleasures! We are proud of the hard work our students put in all year. Thanks to our new reading program, we saw gains in our reading scores this year.  Let's keep those gains going and avoid the "summer slide" by continuing with 20-30 minutes of daily reading. The Monona Public Library has a nice summer program for students, and all our classes are familiar with it due to their trips to the library this spring.

There are a few farewells to share. Mrs. Becky Winther, 4th Grade, will be leaving MGSD and relocating to the Reedsburg area. Mrs. Sandy Bahler, 4K paraprofessional, heads off into a well deserved retirement. Mrs. Grace Kyllo, Family Liaison, will return to retirement to spend more time with friends and family. Mrs. Julie Witherell, speech and language, will return to retirement after helping out with extra support this year. Thank you to our long term substitute teachers Paula Gray, 1st Grade, Mrs. Diane Jensen, 5th Grade, Mrs. Chelsea Koneczny, Guidance and Mrs. Jacinda Wapneski, AM 4K; they served our students well as they took over for teachers on leave.

Enjoy the summer...soon Registration (August 12) and Back to School Night (August 26) will be here before you know it. Thank you to our wonderful families for supporting our school!

Winnequah Reading Celebration

On June 4th, we will honor and celebrate the achievements of our Winnequah Owls who have received support in increasing their literacy skills. We are very proud of their progress and effort in reaching their individual goals as a reader. Our celebration will take place in the Winnequah IMC. Karen Wendt, from Monona Public Library, will share information on the importance of reading over the summer and she will highlight the public library summer reading program.   Students will then head outdoors to enjoy a refreshing treat!

Thank you for all of your support during the 2014-2015 school year! Please continue to support your son/daughter throughout the summer in maintaining the habit of daily reading.  If you would like further information on summer reading tips please email one of the reading staff at Winnequah School.

Fine Arts Night

On Thursday, May 7, Winnequah School held Fine Arts Night.  The halls became a gallery and performance space, featuring the finest artwork of Monona's kindergarten through 5th grade students, and celebrating their accomplishments as young artists. A wide variety of student artwork was on display throughout the building that evening, so much to be proud of!

Ben Ferris was in the gym and outside in the Winnequah School garden, leading performances by 4th and 5th grade strings students, and many students chose to share public readings at the open mic 'Poetry Jam' organized by Casey Ince in celebration of April's Poetry Month.  In the cafeteria there were free Art Activity stations for all ages.  For the first time, there were food carts invited to the event as well, allowing people to stay a bit longer over the dinner hour to enjoy the displayed works and student performances.

Library Field Trip Recap
This week every student at Winnequah walked over to the Monona Public Library. They learned about the summer reading program including upcoming events and tacking reading minutes.  Students also had a chance to apply for a library card ahead of time and check out books during the visit.

TerraCycle News
With the end of the school year upon us, the TerraCycle team would like to say thank you to everyone who collected items, or who decorated bins at school and throughout the community, or who stood out in the cold on TerraCycle Tuesday mornings to remind people about this important program. We especially want to thank all the teachers who put TerraCycle bins in their classrooms and Principal Schroeder for her awesome TerraCycle Tuesday announcements.

To date we've worked together to recycle over: 6,500 drink pouches, 1000 fruit/veggie squeezable snack pouches, 1,400 Little Bite pouches, 280 lunch kits, 1,300 cereal bags, 540 diaper packages, 1,400 beauty and dental care items ... and more! Not only are these items kept out of landfills, but our school also earns a small cash reward. So far, you've helped raise over 200 dollars, just by recycling.

Finally, remember to keep TerraCycling all summer!  Collect the same items and drop them off at the library or community center.  Print this list of items as well as this poster with pictures of each item and display it at your home or office to help explain what we are/not able to collect. Only the items listed can be collected and sent in to TerraCycle for reimbursement to the Winnequah School fund.

If you're ever unsure if an item can be TerraCycled, feel free to call one of our friendly volunteers at 608-332-9015. We welcome your questions and program feedback.

Thank you and have a great summer!
