Thank You to the AOLS from Habitat for Humanity

As those who attended the 2014 AGM in Niagara Falls might remember, this year, we had some special gifts for all the speakers. Instead of presenting the speakers with another book or a watch, we made donations to Habitat for Humanity in their name. A total of $3,900 was donated, to be distributed equally between the Habitat offices in Toronto (the AOLS office location), Niagara (the location of the 2014 AGM) and Peterborough/Kawarthas (the location of the outgoing AOLS President, Eric Ansell).

We would like to thank our members for making this donation possible, as well as for their individual work in terms of helping Habitat for Humanity. In particular, we thank Paul Benedict for coming up with the idea of giving speakers donations to a charity as a way of thanking them.

We have received thank-you letters from Habitat for Humanity and would like to pass these thanks on to our members.

Please click here to see the thank-you letter from the Habitat's Toronto office.

The letter from the Habitat's Niagara office is below:

"On behalf of Habitat for Humanity Niagara, I would like to thank you and the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors for your recent gift to Habitat Niagara through Habitat Toronto.

We have been doing some amazing work here in Niagara for the past 21 years, helping hardworking, low-income families build brighter futures. Our work is only accomplished through the generosity of donors like you who are helping to improve the lives of families by providing safe, decent and affordable housing.

Home ownership has been shown to improve children's health and grades, increase parents' education and employment opportunities, and strengthen communities. Your investment in Habitat for Humanity Niagara will help us continue to transform lives both locally and globally.

On behalf of our families, Board members, volunteers and partners, thank you for your contribution. We are proud to live in a community where organizations like the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors believe in the value of philanthropy. We cannot say thank you enough.

If you are ever in St. Catharines, please stop by our office and ReStore and we can show you how your donation is helping families build hope in Niagara.

Thank you once again for your thoughtful generosity.

"Failure to get house survey can be costly" - Article in Toronto Star

An article on the importance of getting a house survey when buying a house was published in the Business section of the Toronto Star on April 25 online and on April 26 in print. The online article is entitled "Failure to get house survey can be costly", and the printed one - "Insist on getting a house survey before you buy".

Ellen Roseman, the author of the article, writes,

"Buying a house or condo is a complex process, and many purchasers make decisions under deadline pressure.

Vanessa Herman wrote to me about her mistakes buying a house in Toronto's Corso Italia area near St. Clair Ave. W. She had been living in Thornhill.

"I am a widow whose husband died just over five years ago. I wanted to start a new life," she says. "My kids had all moved into the city and I wanted to make it easier for us to get together."

Her top priority was parking. Not until after closing the $520,000 house deal did she learn that her concrete parking pad was illegal."

"Employment Wanted" Website Section

Dear members,

We have been encouraging students to post their resumes on our website in the Employment Wanted section (under Jobs). Please keep checking this section for potential candidates to hire for summer jobs as well as for full-time employment: www.aols.org/classifieds/employment-wanted

A Message from PSC: New Member Benefit

We are providing a new benefit to members of Professional Surveyors Canada. The sad fact is that many surveying businesses experience theft of surveying equipment, thus adding to the cost of running their business.

To assist in the recovery of stolen items, Professional Surveyors Canada has created a Stolen Equipment web page and a reporting web page.

We encourage registered
Members of Professional Surveyors Canada to make use of this complimentary service.

We would like to thank Derek Graham for suggesting the addition of a stolen equipment section to our website!
