AGM 2014 Follow-Up

The AOLS Welcomes Its First Ever Woman President!

Dasha Page, Hon. B.Sc, M.A., O.L.S., O.L.I.P, became the first woman president of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors on February 26th. Dasha is Vice President and Director of Matthews, Cameron, Heywood - Kerry T. Howe Surveying Ltd. Ontario Land Surveyors - Professional Engineers with offices in Niagara Falls and Lindsay, Ontario. She is an active member of the Niagara Falls Chamber of Commerce.

Dasha holds degrees from the Czech Technical University in Prague and the University of Toronto and has over 25 years of surveying experience.

She has an extensive land surveying experience planning, managing and directing the production of legal surveys and plans. She has managed many projects for public and separate school boards, Ontario Realty Corporation, Ministry of Transportation, Ontario Power Generation, Hamilton Power Authority and Toronto Transit Commission.

One of the issues that Dasha will address over the next year will be the aging of the Association's membership. This appears to be a continued trend with the aging of baby boomers. It does, however, create opportunity for new surveyors to build life-long careers.

Taking on the role of President is a huge commitment and it is great to see the support that Dasha is getting from her colleagues. They are, from left to right: Allan Heywood, OLS; Dasha Page, OLS; Andrew Cameron, OLS; Deb Visser, administrator; and Gerald Hickson, OLS (Lindsay office).

AGM 2014 Survey: Your Feedback, Please!

Thank you to everyone who has attended the 122nd AOLS Annual General Meeting in Niagara Falls last week!

If you have not yet done so, please take a few minutes to complete the AGM 2014 Survey.

Your feedback is very important as it will help us plan future AGMs and make sure the attendees get the best value for their time and money.

Please complete this survey by Friday, March 14, 2014.

Thank You to Sponsors and Exhibitors

On behalf of Council and members of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors, please accept our heart-felt gratitude for your generous contributions to sponsor our 122nd Annual General Meeting. This certainly assisted in making our AGM a success.

Once again, the Scavenger Hunt was enjoyed by many of the students as well as members of the Association. Seven teams participated this year, with "Team Awesome" (comprised of York University students) winning the prize of one $150 Visa card per team member (total prize value of $450)! Thanks to all who participated for helping to make this event a competitive but fun activity during our AGM.

A special thanks to Nancy Grozelle for helping out with the scoring of the event and to Shawn Hodgson and Al Jeraj for their input and ideas.

Ryerson University Successfully Held 2014 Geomatics Career Fair

by Dr. Songnian Li, P.Eng., OLS, Professor in Geomatics Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Ryerson University

The Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Geography jointly hosted the 2014 Geomatics Career Fair for the undergraduate and graduate students from the Civil and Geomatics Engineering and Geographic and Spatial Analysis programs. Students from other programs at Ryerson University were also invited to attend. Sponsored by Ryerson University's Career Development and Employment Centre, the Fair provided a personalized venue for employers and students to share information and explore Geomatics-related career opportunities.

The Fair was held on 24 February 2014 in the International Room at Ryerson's International Living and Learning Centre. It featured special presentations by participating employers, an open networking session, and on-site interviews. Over 60 students as well as Geomatics faculty members from the Civil Engineering program and the Geographic Analysis program attended the event. During the networking session, the students were very engaged and eager to use the opportunity to talk to companies. About 20 students signed up for on-site interviews scheduled right after the Fair. The Fair was deemed a success by all attendees.

We would like to acknowledge all participating companies and organizations, including McElhanney Land Surveys Ltd., TULLOCH Geomatics Inc., MMM Group Ltd., J.D. Barnes Ltd., ESRI Canada, Hydro One, the City of Toronto, and the Canadian Urban Institute. With their support, the event was a great success. In particular, we would like to thank the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors (AOLS) for their support in promoting the Fair.
