A Message from Our President
Fall is a time of high activity coming from our summer rest. While there was a lot taking place at home and Prince of Peace over the summer, it's still a different schedule. The after hours calendar is not as full during the summer and many people took their much needed vacations. We kicked fall off with "God's Work. Our Hands". where over 325 people participated in many opportunities throughout the weekend. That's more than double the amount we had last year! Thank you to Debbie Heidrich and the Community and Global Ministry team for organizing and coordinating the weekend and having a coordinator/leader for each site. Adding Saturday enabled more opportunities for Prince of Peace to partner with local organizations. Thank you for praying for all those involved and participating where you could. It is sincerely appreciated by your neighbors and communities.
As we kick off our 20/20 Vision campaign this fall, I am excited about the possibilities that this brings to Prince of Peace. The opportunity to expand our ministries to reach more people, to provide more camp scholarships, to support an intern that wants to fulfill God's vision of a world restored with grace and peace, and to support our partners such as HTF and Trinity Seminary.   It's exciting. Then reality hits and the questions come, "How can I give more?" "I am already giving what feels challenging." "Should I give again?"
Many of us have stories of our faith journey and often times they take place outside of Sunday worship. I want to share a part of my story with you that helps explain in a small way why I am so passionate about ministry.
I am from Cleveland, Ohio, and the oldest of 6 children. I was not raised in a churched family. When I was about 10 years old, someone shared with my mom an outreach called Friendly Town. Friendly Town was run by a group through a church in Cleveland. They networked with other churches around Ohio to match inner city children with host families in the suburbs of Cleveland or a rural community such as Conneaut Lake and Ashland, OH. It was to give inner city children an opportunity to see outside of the city. At age 10, I traveled on a bus from Cleveland, OH to Shelby, OH to spend one week with a family that I only knew through a letter (no internet back in those days). I was both anxious and excited at the same time. My host family had no children of their own at the time, so I was met by them and a neighbor's child. During the week I learned about life on a farm, attended Sunday worship, attended the Wednesday evening church dinner, an ice cream social at the Grange and a county fair. Being a city kid, this was all new to me! Seven days later, the parents drove me back to my home and visited with my family for a short time and left. We kept in touch by letters, Christmas cards, and birthday cards. For the next 4 years, they requested me as their Friendly Town child. The last year, I was at their home for almost the entire summer. I loved it! I drove the tractors around the farm, could stack hay 6 high, learned how to ride a horse, and every week we went to church to Sunday worship and the Wednesday community meal. Their church community was their family. I quickly became part of that family. I was welcomed and loved by them and their community. I truly believe that the Friendly Town outreach program and my host family planted my seed of faith. During high school and college, I attended church if a friend invited me. It wasn't until I graduated from college and settled in Columbus, OH, that I began to seek out a church. I honestly don't know why, except that I remembered the feeling of belonging to a community and that I loved the Sunday messages about Jesus. It was at this time that I decided to be baptized and joined Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Westerville, OH.
I share this with you because I believe that we don't always get to see the benefit of our gifts. I do believe that as we continue to reach out to others and invite them in, do God's will on earth as it is in heaven, and live & love like Jesus, that we continue to plant seeds and grow disciples through our ministry.
We are prayerfully considering our stewardship and how we can share God's blessings with others. I invite you to do the same.
May the peace and love of God be with you always,

Danette Miller,
Council President

Team Acolyte

Learn what it takes to be an acolyte
Acolytes are very important servants. They are children who help lead worship by lighting candles, serving during communion, and participating in the worship service.

All students are encouraged to find a way to serve in worship, and serving as an acolyte is a great way to serve God and to serve our congregation.

Whether you're a new acolyte or in need of a refresher,
please join us to be equipped as an acolyte on

Sunday, October 11 from 12:15-12:45 pm

We'll meet in the Atrium and learn all of the important steps of being an acolyte at Prince of Peace.   If you can't make the training, watch an online training available soon at (www.youtube.com/poppastors)

Anyone can acolyte who is able to lead worship by sitting with the pastors up front, pay attention during the worship service, and reach the candles to light them.

Will you join Team Acolyte?

This Reformation Weekend (October 24 and 25) at Prince of Peace, many of our ninth grade students will step forward and commit to continuing to participate in God's mission. After two years of faith formation, we've built upon the foundations laid by parents, grandparents, family, mentors, and church family.  We've worked through some of the tough questions of our faith (and we still have many unanswered questions!).  And now, we look forward to what's to come for our church, our community, and our world because of their witness.

On their Confirmation day, these students will remember their baptisms and be asked this question:

Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism?
To live among God's faithful people
To hear the word of God and share in the Lord's Supper
To proclaim the good news of God in Christ
through word and deed
To serve all people, following the example of Jesus,
And to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?
I do, and I ask God to help me.

There is still work to be done in pursuing God's Kingdom here on earth.  It is all of our work and we are blessed to welcome a new class of Confirmands.  Please keep these students and their families in your prayers as they prepare for this special time in their lives of faith.

Many thanks to those who have served as guides, teachers, and mentors to them over these last two years:

We are off to a great start this year! One hundred thirty seven adorable preschoolers are back in the halls and classrooms of POP Kids and we are looking forward to a wonderful year.

Thanks to Pat McWhirter, Carol Clevidence and Pastor Lorne who were the Prince of Peace greeting team at the Open House. The Faulhaber family gave back to POP Kids by planting our landscaping outside of the POP Kids main entrance. We loved having them here for many years, and they also wanted to thank us for the time we shared together.  We look outside our door everyday and are thankful! Big thanks to my husband, Dan, who prepped the landscaping space and brought the big boulder!

There still are a few Pre-K spots open in the afternoon if you have neighbors, friends or family looking for a great preschool.

Thanks for all your support and prayers!

God's blessings,
Angie Seiller, Administrator

                                                           Congregation Life

Fall is here! Here are updates regarding Congregational Life at POP.

Annual POP Picnic: August 22 had a great turn out for our picnic. Many gathered for fun games, community, and shared food. The sign up for food items worked well, people were able to see what food items were signed up for and decide what to bring to share. Congregational Life provided hot dogs and beverages. Thank you to all who helped and attended.

New Members: On August 29 & 30, POP welcomed new members at 5:00 pm Saturday service and 8:45 am Sunday service. Thank you to those who served cake and punch.

Trunk or Treat: Tuesday, October 27, is the date for this family fun event. Kim Donaldson will be coordinating this event. See Trunk or Treat article for additional information.

Building Up Marriages and Families

How do we improve resiliency in our marriages? How do we deal with difficult family situations in a distinctly Christian way? How does Christian counseling differ from regular counseling?
Our Stephen Ministry group has invited 2 licensed Christian Counselors to lead a discussion on "Building Up Marriages and Families" on Oct 14 at 7 PM in the POP Atrium. This presentation is part of the continuing education requirement for Stephen Ministers, but is open to anyone who is interested in this topic.

Syrian Refugees in Conow Area
We've heard a lot in the news recently about the large number of migrants, particularly from Syria, trying to make their way to Europe and particularly to Germany. The news from our partner congregation in Conow, Germany, is that they have made contact with a Syrian refugee family that has recently been placed in the larger nearby town of Maliss. Pastor Dörte Hasenpusch is married to a pastor in Maliss and lives there. Our contact Rolf Stuerzenbecher reports:

"Near us in Maliss the first 15 Syrian refugees (a family with 9 children and young men who are related to this family) have arrived. The mayor and we from the congregation greeted them in a celebration together. Many of the people are donating for these refugees. I invited the father of the family to our worship service and I picked him up in my car from his apartment. There exists a very close bond between our congregation and these refugees. Yes, we can take care of 15 refugees in our community." But like many Germans who are very welcoming, they also worry about the effect on the country of a massive number of refugees as is being discussed, and seek comfort and belief in the power of prayer for what lies ahead.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TURNOVER OF THE KEYS

The dedication celebration of the Habitat for Humanity South Lebanon home occurred Saturday, August 22. The Spurrier family shown in the picture received the keys, a family Bible, and other house warming gifts from Ed Lee, Habitat Cincinnati President.

The house was completed 6 weeks ahead of schedule due to the Loveland Coalition volunteer's efforts and excellent site management from Habitat Cincinnati. Prince of Peace volunteers worked on this home 10 days in 2015. Each day we teamed with another Loveland Coalition church, making new friends as we used our skills and learned new skills.

The Spurrier family now has a home valued at $125,000 that cost under $100,000 to build including the land cost. As per Habitat Cincinnati policy, their no interest mortgage is $500 per month inclusive of taxes and homeowner's insurance. This is a strong incentive to be long term homeowners.

Thank you, Prince of Peace volunteers, for a great effort in 2015. The Loveland Coalition will be gathering this fall to discuss 2016 plans. If you have any questions or suggestions, please email Jerry Draeger, Prince of Peace Habitat Coordinator, at wi450@aol.com.

First Lutheran Clothing Bank Needs Donations!

We are so grateful for the surge in donations over the past month.  Our numbers are holding steady at over 40 people per month.  We were happy to have extra volunteers for September.  The most requested items remain the same and are included in the list below.  While currently the weather has been warm and beautiful, we expect October distribution to be crisp and cooler.  We will be full-on into fall items by then.  If you have summer items to donate, please bless the Goodwill or Salvation Army with your bounty.  Here is the list of what we could really use:

men's jeans, inseams of 32 most asked for
size 40 and 42 bras
bath towels (used are fine as long as they're not threadbare)
twin size blankets or sleeping bags
twin size flat sheets or sheet sets
toothbrushes
hoodies
large shopping bags with handles or backpacks
men's underwear - size M only
men's belts
short (waist or hip length) winter coats, men's & women's
deodorant
masking tape

Blessings to you, and thank you so much for your prayers and support!

LOVELAND TO HAITI

Loveland Schools are facilitating a unique opportunity to help a group of young men who tragically became amputees after the Haitian earthquake 5 1/2 years ago. Since then, they have come together to form a soccer league, which is vital to their survival and support as they are marginalized now in Haitian society for their physical disabilities. Many of them walk on crutches up to 5 miles one way to reach the stadium to play soccer and to have their only daily meal. They are in desperate need of soccer equipment as well as more pairs of English crutches. For information on how you can help, please visit http://fromlovelandtohaiti.blogspot.com/. Check out the Community Board for collection locations.

Serving Opportunities

Our next volunteer opportunity at Matthew 25 is on October 10, from 9:00 - 11:00 am.

Matthew 25 is a church/warehouse that ships excess articles from various Cincinnati businesses to third world countries. Volunteers are the hands that make this all happen. The last time we volunteered, we were in a huge room with boxes of clothing with the boxes only slightly smaller than us.  We separated the good clothes from the bad and it was a fun experience and a good way to get acquainted with other church members. The session only lasts 2 hours and there is even a break room! Come join us. Sign up sheets are located on the sign up board.
