QUICKLINKS

From the Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As Holy Trinity Sunday comes and goes, we enter into the longest liturgical cycle that we now call "Ordinary Time".  It is the long season that runs throughout the entire summer and fall until we get to Reformation, All Saints, and Christ the King leading us once again to the beginning of Advent.  We have only one newsletter for the next two months as well.  Sunday school is done until the fall.  We have one less worship service.  On the surface, it may look like not just "ordinary time" but rather "idle time".

Yet pay close attention to the color of this long season.  The color is green, the color of growth.  This is a "growing season" as well.  We do plan to have more time for abiding and slowing down over the summer, but things far from stop around here over the summer.  There are wonderful opportunities for our children to grow and to learn over the next few months.  We will have our Vacation Bible School, a high school Discipleship Tour to Baltimore, a week at Camp Mowana, and a day camp at Roselawn Lutheran.   We will also hold auditions and prepare for a performance of Godspell in the fall.  There are adult volunteer opportunities as a part of these weeks as well.

I am also going to be inviting you to a new opportunity to grow in the Word and our understanding of our mission at Prince of Peace as we participate in a pilot program of the ELCA called Stories Matter.  We will look at the biblical narrative and ask the question, "Which Bible Story best relates to our story at Prince of Peace.  As we celebrate our first fifty years and look toward our next fifty years, it is a great time to contemplate how God is leading and guiding us into our future.  I will share more details about this after Pastor Lorne is on board and we put our schedules together.

Oh yes, did I mention Pastor Lorne?  This is another hugely important part of our growing season this year.  Our staff is growing.  Their family is growing as they await their first child.  We will have an ordination service to attend in Reynoldsburg, and an installation service here at Prince of Peace.  These will be exciting times to celebrate his new ministry and the growth happening in his life as a leader.

And of course the most visible part of our growth throughout the summer will be our new building going up.  Every day the scenery is changing as the workers continue to build.

Yes, it is "Ordinary Time" but it is not idle time.  The Holy Spirit continues to move among us in this growing season. We pray for God's blessing upon all of the growth experiences of this summer here and in your daily living.

God's peace be with you,

In Christ,

Pastor Jonathan

Welcome Pastor Lorne Hlad

On May 19, the congregation was introduced to Pr. Lorne and Becca Hlad. Following a informational talk and question and answer period with Pr. Lorne, the congregation voted unanimously to extend a call to him to be our new associate pastor.

Pr. Lorne was raised in Columbus, Ohio. While serving in Iraq, his heart was captured by the gospel and set him on a path of service to God. Pr. Lorne's call to ministry and gifts for sharing the gospel grew while finishing college at The Ohio State University and working at Jacob's Porch Campus Ministry. After college, Pr. Lorne attended Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, OH, where he recently earned a Master of Divinity. He has been a keynote speaker and preacher at churches, conferences, and youth events for the last five years.

Pr. Lorne is married to his wife Becca, and they await the birth of their first child!

Pr. Lorne's ordination is June 14, at 6:30 pm at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1200 Waggoner Road, Reynoldsburg, OH.

Pr. Lorne's installation at Prince of Peace will be on Saturday July 27, at the 5:00 pm worship service.

ELCA Southern Ohio Synod

SynodFest - June 7-8

What is SynodFest?  It is a synod festival for all members of Southern Ohio ELCA Synod Congregations taking place on June 7 and 8 at Wittenberg University in Springfield OH. It is a time to come together as one body to celebrate, worship, learn, share, serve and take care of synod business.

The election of a new bishop for our synod will take place on Saturday. The election of a Synodical Bishop is more than just another election of an official in our lives. It is a call, a call guided by the Holy Spirit, made with discernment in the midst of the community of those who comprise the voting members of the Synod Assembly. As previously communicated Pastor Jonathan is a prospective nominee for this position.  Prince of Peace can send three voting members to represent our congregation. This year Bill Clevidence, Marti Kelley and Becky Mastalerz  will be our "official" attendees. However, everyone is welcome to attend. Results will be available on the synod website (www.southernohiosynod.org) and an email will be sent from Prince of Peace. Please pray for our synod as the Holy Spirit guides the call of our new bishop.

Prince of Peace
 50th Anniversary

"A Firm Foundation:
Celebrating 50 Years of Prince of Peace"

On May 12, 1963 under the leadership of Pastor David Kruger, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church was officially organized as a congregation of the Ohio Synod of the Lutheran Church in America. That Sunday, fifty-three adults and sixty children became charter members of the mission congregation.

There is a display of photos from the first decade of our history in the mailbox hallway.  A new decade of photos and posters will be displayed on June 15, July 13, August 17, and September 14. You will also be able to see refurbished posters from previous anniversary celebrations marking the significant events of our fifty year

God has blessed us as a congregation in so many ways over the past half century, laying a firm foundation for the decades of service to come. Join us in celebrating the past as we prepare for the future.

Acolyte Training

June 9, 10-10:30 am

Acolytes are very important servants. They are children who help lead worship by lighting candles, serving during communion, and participating in the worship service.

All students are encouraged to find a way to serve in worship, and serving as an acolyte is a great way to serve God and to serve our congregation.

Whether you're a new acolyte or in need of a refresher, please join us for training on Sunday, June 9 from 10 - 10:30am.

We'll meet in the Atrium and learn all of the important steps of being an acolyte at Prince of Peace.

Acolytes are usually in 5th to 8th grade. Will you join the acolyte team?

Contact Karen Skarda (kskarda@popluther.org) with questions.

The D-Tour is upon us!  Later this month over 50 students and adults from Prince of Peace will embark on a Discipleship Tour together. On this D-Tour we will dig into the practices of encouragement, invitation, prayer, study, worship, giving and service and include a week of serving at partner organizations like food banks, halfway houses, soup kitchens, kids camps, and more. We'll also schedule a visit to DC where we will learn about the ELCA's commitment to advocacy, visit the National Cathedral, and Holocaust Museum.

It's a discipleship tour - it's not a week of service, it's a way of life!

Please pray for the following students and adults who will be growing in faith while serving in Baltimore:

Help Up Create a New POP Pictorial Directory

Summer 2013

This summer, we are creating a new pictorial directory and we need your photos!  We will be doing these digitally so that they can be uploaded to our database.  A directory will then be printed this fall and sold at cost for those that wish to purchase a printed copy.  Those that want to take advantage of viewing current member contact information and photos digitally, will be able to access them via a computer or on a smart phone.  More to come!  To make this photo directory happen, we need your help.

How can you get your photo taken?

·       Come to the Atrium

·       Every 2nd and 4th weekend this summer

·       30 minutes prior to and after worship

We will have volunteers ready to take your family or individual photo.   It will only take a few minutes.

If you would like to volunteer to help take photos, please contact Karen Skarda at kskarda@popluther.org   Your service is appreciated!

Amazing Grace Day Camp at Roselawn

This summer, Prince of Peace and Roselawn Lutheran Church are partnering to share God's grace with children from Roselawn at a day camp.  We need you to deliver

a meal, share your gifts, practice hospitality, prepare a snack, or serve in a variety of other ways!  The POP Community will be working with staff from

LOMO (Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Ohio) to spread

the Gospel. Through songs, crafts, games, nature, and discovery times, children will discover and kindle a faith

of their own.

INKING OF YOU
 June 6, 10 am - 12 pm

Come in June and help us make birthday and thinking of you cards.  We will not meet in July, but we will meet again on August 1, at 10:00 am, where, we will be making Christmas cards for the LIFE Food Pantry senior clients.  Supplies are furnished and no experience is needed.  We want to thank Lois Grubert for her generous donation of stamps and accessories to the group.

Please note:  The group known as UFO (Unfinished Objects) will be expanding to "Inking of You Too (2.)"  Those attending can learn different stamping techniques and work on their personal cards and/or cards to donate to organizations such as LIFE, POP, and care center patients.  Attendees should also feel free to bring any unfinished object that they'd like to work on.  Inking of You Too (2) will meet on Tuesdays beginning in September.  Watch the newsletters and bulletins for more details.

On Sunday, April 14, we broke ground for our new sanctuary and and music/educational wing.  During April and May, the new retention pond at the corner of Durango and West Loveland Avenue was completed; the Durango parsonage home was demolished; excavation was completed for parking and the building area; utility tie-ins were started; footers were dug and the foundation walls began to be erected on the education wing.  During June and July, it is anticipated that the education wing will be under roof with interior work to follow and utility tie ins will continue.  The congregation is invited to monthly updates with Al Kressler, a member of the building committee and the owner's site representative, on the third Wednesday of each month at 11:30 am in the Atrium.   Weekly updates can be found in the announcements and on the Prince of Peace Facebook page.

POP Shirts!

Fifty years ago, a small band of people formed a congregation which we've grown to know and love!  During this year, we celebrate the mission and ministry of Prince of Peace. Youth from Prince of Peace are heading to Baltimore, MD to serve and grow as disciples this summer. They have put together some great POP clothing as a fundraiser. We hope you'll show your Prince of Peace pride and order a shirt.

Order forms are due June 2 to Mary Ellen Helms.

A Look at What's Happening in
Missional Communities:

connect4

Summer, summer, summer!  Ready or not - it's here!  Our mission is to connect kids, parents, God, and others all year long, all lifelong.   Our community will gather this summer to do just that!

Tuesdays June 11 & 25 and July 2 & 16 - Gather at Symmes Park under the furthest back shelter (Shady Ridge).  We'll enjoy potluck dinners and then hang out at the park from 6 pm-7:30 pm.

We will cancel for rain or thunderstorms. Look for a GODS Time to be scheduled later in the summer!

Email Suzanne Eilert (eilerts@cinci.rr.com) or Mary Ellen Helms (MEHelms@popluther.org) to stay in touch!

Families Matter

Volunteers needed for serving at Roselawn

Families Matter, the missional community focused on serving the Roselawn area, needs several more friendly, caring people who are interested in positively impacting this area.  Beginning in June, we will be preparing and serving food every other week for the picnic sponsored by Roselawn Lutheran Church.  We need some help with food but more importantly we need people of any age who are also willing to eat with and get to know the people we serve.  In building these relationships, we have the opportunity to get past the surface, build trust and grow God's kingdom.  We know there is a particular need to have male role models in the lives of the boys who are coming, but we also need to have women to help build these relationships.  It can be awkward and uncomfortable at first, but that changes when folks see you come regularly and genuinely engage in conversation with them.  The dates we will be serving at Roselawn are:  June 12, July 3, July 17, July 31 and August 14th.

Feel free to talk with Terri or Eugene Rutz to learn more (733-0825; eugene.rutz@uc.edu).

We could use your help!

Vámonos!

Vámonos! is a missional community that brings together people focused on healthy living; if we keep our bodies and minds healthy, only then are we able to do the things that God has called us to do.  We gather monthly as a community of faith and support one another in healthy lifestyles, in addition to getting together at Zumba Fitness classes (see schedule below).    You do not need to attend Zumba Fitness to be part of the Vámonos! community, but it is a great way to "get moving!"

Walkin' Wednesdays

Each Wednesday at 6:30 pm

Get moving with Vámonos! each Wednesday evening for a group walk on the bike trail.  All walking levels welcome!  Invite others in the community to walk with us, build relationships, and experience nature together.

6:30 pm - Meet by the bench outside Julian's Deli in downtown Loveland

6:35 pm - Break off into groups and begin the walk with whoever is there at that time

In case of bad weather, the walk is cancelled.  Light drizzle won't keep this group down...but lightning will.  Use common sense and stay safe!

The last Wednesday of each month, we will meet back at the bench outside Julian's Deli at 7:30 pm for refreshments / gathering as a community in downtown Loveland, whoever can stay.

Vámonos!  Summer Picnic

Sunday, July 28

5:30 - 7:30 pm

11713 Park Court, Loveland (Chatham Woods Subdivision)

Gather with Vámonos at Deanna Richter's home for a summer potluck - healthy food and rich fellowship.    Turkey burgers will be provided.    Bring a dish to pass or just show up!  All welcome to celebrate together the beautiful gift of summer and the Vámonos! community.

RSVP to Karen Skarda (karenskarda@gmail.com or 312-9498) by July 21.

The mission of Zoe Missional Community is to connect with young adults with various challenges (cognitive, physical, or emotional) via social, service or worship experiences.  If you have a passion for inclusion, come and be a part of our ongoing adventure and support the radical hospitality to which Christ calls us.

Contact Zoe Missional Community Leaders with any questions or for further additional information:  Linda Paduk at 513-314-2717 or Marti Lemond at 513-777-0042.

POP Kids Update

a ministry of Prince of Peace

The year quickly came to an end.  Our last day before summer was Friday, May 17.  Our theme in May was "We Can" as we reviewed all the things that we learned through the year.  In addition, a few classes built castles in their classrooms as we learned about fairy tales or for when dads visited us on their special day and answered the question," if my dad were king"? We ended the month with a visit from the Loveland School Bus so our graduating kids could learn about their big bus rides in the future.  It all makes you want to be a preschooler again!

POP Kids School

We still have a few spaces in our 2-1/2 year old class and our pre-K class for 2013-14.  We are completely full in our 3's classes.  Please call (683-1600) or   e-mail (popkids@fuse.net) the school with any questions or to set up a tour.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

Serving in Him,

Angie Seiller

Greetings from the Conow (Germany) Church

Pastor Dörte Hasenpusch and our partner congregation in Germany send greetings and God's blessings to us at Prince of Peace. This is a partnership established about twenty years ago after the fall of communism in eastern Germany, and Dianne and I visited them recently.  We arrived on Ascension Day (a national holiday), attended a worship service where I read a letter of greeting from Pastor Jonathan which was greeted by applause, and participated in a confirmation service for five young people the next Sunday which was Pentecost.  On Monday, the Pentecost national holiday, we attended a special holiday service.

The church is in a rural area of small villages, has nominally over a thousand members, but in the German way only about thirty people worship on a given Sunday.  For the Sunday of confirmation, there were about a hundred worshipers.  One of the confirmands was the grandson of our host family, Rolf and Etha Stürzenbecher, and the party given in his honor at a local sports hall lasted from the end of the church service until well after dark, with people coming and going throughout the day, and ending up with singing and dancing.  During the week we took a bus tour "In the Footsteps of Martin Luther" with three dozen men and women from a regional men's church group.

We are blessed that we have fellowship with the Conow church congregation and that it provides a doorway through which we can enrich our Lutheran heritage.

Lutheran Disaster Relief

Within hours of violent storms that hit Oklahoma and other states this past week, Lutheran Disaster Response affiliates were already on the ground, assessing the immediate and long-term needs of those affected by the tornadoes. Your gifts are needed now to begin coordinating volunteers, rebuilding homes and offering spiritual and emotional care to those in need. Gifts designated to "U.S. Tornadoes" through Lutheran Disaster Response will be used entirely - 100 percent - to help survivors of tornadoes rebuild their lives and livelihoods. There are three ways to give--marking your offering envelopes "US Tornadoes" with checks made payable to POP, mailing a donation using the forms at the Welcome Center, or giving online at www.elca.org.

Closing Thoughts from our President

Greetings,

Everyone looks forward to summer and Prince of Peace is no different. There are many exciting opportunities available during the summer season. There is something for everyone, so read your newsletter and mark your calendars.

Please keep Pastor Jonathan and his family in your prayers as he is a prospective nominee for bishop of the Southern Ohio Synod.  This month, we will welcome our new pastor, Lorne Hlad. We look forward to having Lorne and his wife Becca as a part of our community and are excited for their new addition, as well as ours! Throughout the summer, our building construction continues.  It is exciting to see the progress that has been made in such a short period of time!

Have a wonderful and blessed summer,

Bill Clevidence

Council President
